We invite you to our 26th Peace and Conflict Talk "More questions than answers? A bottom-up study of the meaning of reconciliation” with our guest speaker @tijana-et-al.bsky.social! 📆 29 April, 2026 🕐 2:00 pm CEST, online 🔗 shorturl.at/QINGx

Flyer for the 26th Peace and Conflict Talk, Logos of Bielefeld University and IKG at the top. Title: More questions than answers? A bottom-up study of the meaning of reconciliation. Tijana Karić, PhD. Description text: What do we actually mean when we talk
about "reconciliation"? Most social
psychological research focuses on the
willingness to reconcile, mapping its
relationship to variables like social identities,
collective victim beliefs, and intergroup
contact. Yet the definition of the very
concept remains surprisingly vague. In this
talk, I present a series of studies conducted
with my collaborators to disentangle this
meaning. Adopting a bottom-up approach,
we investigated in the context of Bosnia and
Herzegovina, where the armed conflict
ended 30 years ago but deep societal divides
persist. Drawing on a methodological
sequence of focus groups, cross-sectional
surveys, and Q methodology, I will discuss
findings that highlight the complexity of the
construct, often raising more questions than
they answer. The session will conclude with
a critical reflection on current frameworks
and an invitation for a critical discussion on
how we study reconciliation and where the
field should go next.

Tomorrow ➡️ Join the 21. Peace & Conflict Talk on the topic "Re-remembering Displacement in Bubenreuth: Collective Memory, Migration, and Urban Identity in a Bavarian small town" with our guest speaker @deniszekovic.bsky.social 🕒 3:00-4:30 p.m. (CET) 🔗 shorturl.at/J9R2z #memory #conflicts #PaCT

Event flyer for the 21st Peace and Conflict Talk by IKG. Title: Re-remembering Displacement in Bubenreuth: Collective Memory, Migration,
and Urban Identity in a Bavarian small town. Speaker: Denis Zeković. On the right hand side there is a portrait picture of the speaker and a qr-code to the event. Thursday, 13th November 2025, 3 to 4:30 p.m. (CET), online via Zoom. Link: https://shorturl.at/J9R2z
Description text on the left side of the flyer: This talk explores the entangled processes of
remembering and forgetting forced migration in
postwar Germany through the case of
Bubenreuth, a small Bavarian town that in 1949
received over 1,600 expellees from the former
Sudetenland. While national narratives long
marginalized the memory of these
displacements, Bubenreuth presents a striking
example of how local communities engage with
and transform migration memory. In detail, the
talk traces how displaced violin makers from
Schönbach came to reshape not only
Bubenreuth’s economy but its urban identity. It
highlights the negotiations that emerged in
shared spaces as arenas where collective
memory was produced over time.
Following the production of collective memory,
the talk foregrounds the social tensions, spatial
segregation, and ambivalent narratives that
were all part of contemporary local heritage. I
will argue that Bubenreuth’s evolving
commemorative landscape exemplifies how
collective memory is shaped by power, place,
and intergenerational negotiation. In doing so,
the talk offers insights into the politics of
remembrance in rural and small-town settings,
shining light on the role of migration memory in
reconfiguring local belonging beyond bigger
cities in contemporary Europe.

Join our next Peace and Conflict Talk (#PaCT) on Wednesday 29 Oct 2025 at 3 pm (CEST) and listen to our guest speaker Dr Sandra Obradović on "The Political Life of Memory: Remembering, belonging and imagining different futures":

Text describing the topic of the online event: What happens to collective memories when nations undergo rapid political change? And how do these memories shape possibilities for managing conflict and building lasting peace? This talk traces the political life of collective memory across contexts and time, beginning with my foundational research in Serbia and extending to broader theoretical insights about memory, power, and conflict transformation.
The talk develops a conceptual argument about collective memories as inherently relational and deeply political: they are shaped by asymmetrical power relations, they frame present-day intergroup dynamics, and they open or close pathways to political futures. I explore my own and wider research on how political leaders strategically manage collective memories to navigate the tension between maintaining identity continuity and enabling necessary change and consider how collective memories become anchors for collective nostalgia, and its relationship with contemporary political attitudes. Finally, I consider how understanding these dynamics can inform conflict resolution practice – not by imposing external narratives, but by recognizing how communities use history as a resource for making sense of turbulent presents and contested futures. In the end, I argue that the question is not whether to engage with collective memory in peacebuilding, but how to do so in ways that acknowledge power, honour multiple perspectives, and create space for transformation.
This talk is part of the Memory and Conflicts theme of PaCT series.
The event will be held online.

"Wie politisch ist die Polizeiliche #Kriminalstatistik?" 🤔 Darüber wollen wir beim ConflictA-Talk am 25.06.2025 sprechen. ✍️ Zur Anmeldung: conflict-a.de/event/save-t...

Bunte Formen und Text: "Conflicta-Talk. Wie politisch ist die polizeiliche Kriminalstatistik? Mittwoch 25.
