Lab supplies? I could have sworn someone said crab supplies. #invertefest
A photo of a crab made out of lab supplies: 10 blue disposable smartspatulas make up the legs. The body is a disposable aluminum weigh dish. The eyestalks are the cut-off bulb ends of disposable transfer pipettes. The legs are tipped with black binder clips. The front pincers are made of different clips, one holds a small centrifuge tube, and the other holds a permanent marker. Clear tape is used to position the feet so that the crab is standing in a decent crab pose. ike blue 2026

Oops, I should have put both of these images in a single post. Anyway, this is another view of the same berries, where I am gently holding the bushes to pose the berries. I ate other berries today, but I actually left this on the bush, somewhere near Blueberry Hill. Maybe someone will find it! 🫐🫐🫐🫐🫐

Wild lowbush blueberries like this are my favorite food. I feel very lucky when I get to see and eat them like this. Who was it that said “we live on a planet where food grows out of the ground! How did we mess that up?” ?

Day 75, art for Day 75! But it’s just 6 large fresh highbush blueberries of approximately the same size arranged in a hexagon. The second image just turns the chroma way up… kind of proving that the blueberries are really blue? The third image rotates the hue to make them even more blue.
A photograph of six large fresh highbush (domesticated) blueberries (product of Canada) arranged in a hexagonal formation on a pale beige ceramic plate. The pentagonal shapes left over from the blueberry flowering/fruiting are visible on the tops of the blueberries. I ate them after I took the photo, and they were tasty, but wild (lowbush) blueberries are still my favorite. ike blue 2026A photograph of six large fresh highbush (domesticated) blueberries (product of Canada) arranged in a hexagonal formation on a pale beige ceramic plate. Day 75, art for day 74. A collection of epoxy castings colored with ink and mica powders. Some are tinkerings, some are leftover resin that wound up in hexagon molds. The rainbow flashes are from diffraction grating surfaces, which are often found spicing up commercial silicone molds these days.
A photograph of 13 hexagon-shaped pieces of cast epoxy arranged in a snowflake-like formation. The hexagons are variously colored with blue alcohol inks and blue glittery mica pigment powders (and some other colors on some of the hexagons). The silicone molds the hexagons were cast in have diffraction gratings molded into their bottom faces, so epoxy cast in them comes out with the same diffraction gratings molded in. ike blue 2026

Day 74, art for day 73. More tinkering with Processing; I'm pleased but not totally satisfied with the way the hexagons dance. (What if, along the lines of square dancing, there was also hexagon dancing? And I could make hexagons do it? I would like to see some kind of a proper hexagon do-si-do.)

Day 72, art for Day 70. I’m tinkering with my ultramarine paint (Yves Klein Blue-style). Based on seeing an Yves Klein monochrome at MoMA (NYC) before it was restored and put behind glass, the thick parts should look as blue as the thinner parts and the dry pigment. So I’ve got more tinkering to do.
Paint of ultramarine blue pigment on white paper. There are some crude hexagonal shapes on the paper made with various brush strokes. Besides the rough hexagonal features, there are a variety of brushstrokes and other marks with the paint on the paper. In some spots, The paint is applied more thickly and has rough/peaky texture, and those spots are a much darker blue than the thinner areas. ike blue 2026Paint of ultramarine blue pigment on white paper. Day 71, interlude - some more hue/chroma edits. I'm not counting these towards Day 70's art because I already posted the blueberries, and I'm not taking credit for just editing someone else's cool photo of bunnies.
A photograph of 17 frozen wild blueberries in a hexagonal formation, thawing on a blue plate... but as frozen wild blueberries are typically more dark purple and even reddish sometimes, I have rotated the hue and heightened the chroma, so that the blueberries are intensely blue, and the plate in the background is a splotchy abstract field of shades of most colors except purple. A group of 6 white bunnies sits closely together in a circle (hexagon) on a brown surface with dark patterns. Their little faces are all pointed inwards and almost touching. Photographer unknown. I have added a blurry, slightly transparent yellow regular hexagonal outline showing how the bunnies are gathered in a hexagonal formation.A group of 6 white bunnies sits closely together in a circle (hexagon) on a brown surface with dark patterns. Day 71, art for Day 69 (nice?). The idea was construct one arbitrary hexagon, and then continue constructing additional hexagons with straightedge and compass based on other intersections and vertices. I tried this yesterday and wasn’t happy with the results, but I learned and I like this better.
Photograph of a colored pencil and pen drawing on a sketchbook page. The main features of the drawing are the outlines of 6 regular hexagons in dark blue pen and colored pencil. However, the drawing is covered with light blue colored pencil circles (and arcs where the circles run off the page) that were used to construct the hexagons. If I did everything right, there should be 42 circles at 7 circles per constructed hexagon, but I probably made a number of mistakes.

Day 70, art for Day 68. When frozen, wild blueberries take on a much more purple and even reddish color than the range of blues they have when they’re fresh. But they’re still blueberries and they’re on a blue plate, so B is for Blueberry, that’s good enough for me.🫐
A close photograph looking down at 17 thawing frozen wild blueberries on a blue plate. They’re arranged in 2d hexagonal packing around a central blueberry. The thawing blueberries look glossy, and their color appears more dark purple and even a bit reddish than blue, but they’re blueberries on a blue plate, so that’s blue and hexagonal enough for me. There’s also some glare and stray blueberry juice on the plate. I hope to do a version of this with fresh wild blueberries later in August. ike blue 2026

There are a lot of variants on this 5-in-one fork-spoon-knife-bottle/can-opener floating around. It’s possible someone makes a good one, but there doesn’t seem to be an ‘original’.

Day 67: Here's some blue hexagon art for Day 64. Here's another hue- (and chroma and brightness) -manipulated photograph. So, I'm just photographing hexagons in the wild and hue-rotating them until they're blue? Yes, and I think it's a valid approach, as limited as it is.
A digital photograph that has been manipulating by rotating the hue of the pixels in hue-chroma-brightness space, and adjusting the chroma and brightness values as well. A mottled intensely blue foreground surface has a blurry hexagonal hole through it, a window into and through a darker space, with smaller hexagonal holes in vertical-edges and horizontal-edges orientations, showing hot pink and deep blue colors, on the other side. The photograph was taken of a rust-patina'd steel structure at Assembly Row in Somerville, MA, with hexagonal holes cut in it. ike blue 2026

Day 66: Here's some hexagon art for Day 63! Back on day 7, I used some hexagons with linear gradient stroke paint, each hexagon inwards rotated 60 degrees. Today is a study of doing just that without the other things I was playing with on day 7. It's another thing I'd like to abstract in code.
A computer drawing of 12 nested concentric regular blue hexagons. The hexagons are unfilled, but the stroke (outline) of each hexagon has significant thickness, and the strokes are painted with a linear gradient so that one vertex of a hexagon is a deep dark blue, and the opposite vertex is a very light pale blue. Each hexagon inwards from the outermost hexagon is rotated by 60 degrees, or 1/6th of a full rotation. This creates a spiraling visual effect when looking at all the hexagons together. There are no lines connecting the center of the hexagons to the vertices, but something about the image makes it look to me like those lines are there, sort of like a crease in a sheet of paper. ike blue 2026.

Yuck, some kind of LLM-based bot attempted to give me critique. Yes, it could work with more contrast, but it's also fine as it. I stand by my silly gradient choices. Anyway, I blocked the bot.

"Intriguing geometric exploration with spiraling hexagons and complex subdivisions. The gradient background adds visual depth, though the composition could benefit from more contrast."

2. I think the words it is using are heavily cribbed from the alt text I wrote for the image in the parent post.

60th #daily #blue #hexagonal #art. Today I played around with something like spiraling hexagons around via center-to-vertex translations, in #inkscape. These are two variations I found that I may want to explore further with code. (gradient background and transparency: entirely gratuitous)
A computer drawing. Two regular hexagons share an edge. Each hexagon appears to be subdivided by black line segments into into many small regions that are equilateral triangles, rhombuses, trapezoids, irregular hexagons, and one smaller regular hexagon. The patterns were mostly generated by placing new hexagons' centers on the vertices of other hexagons, in a spiraling manner. Mostly, because some tweaks were applied to make the patterns in both hexagons have 6-fold rotational symmetry. The hexagons are colored a medium, partially transparent blue, very faintly revealing the outlines of the underlying hexagons that were placed. The background is an elliptical gradient that transitions through 5 shades of blue. ike blue 2026

59th #daily #blue #hexagonal art. First, the mold-facing side of the piece that was curing yesterday. Then, two photos of the one I’m trying today, taken a while apart. I think small convection currents arise from the heat of the epoxy curing, which tends to cause mixing of adjacent colors.
A photograph of a hexagonal piece of cured epoxy resin filled with mostly blue but also some purple and orange mica powder. The hexagon is divided into 24 equilateral triangular regions, but the colors in the epoxy do not generally vary according to this divisions, due to how the epoxy flowed before it solidified.A photograph of wet epoxy resin in a hexagonal mold. Three internal hexagonal sub-regions of the mold are fold with different shades of blue mica powder in the epoxy resin, and there are rough triangular regions of orange and purple as well. A rough spiral pattern is visible in the resin, which was a result of pouring a thin flow of unpigmented epoxy resin onto the resin already in the mold.A photograph of the same wet epoxy resin as in the previous photo, taken some time later. The spiral pattern is almost invisible now, and the apparent texture of the mica powder in the epoxy resin looks smoother.

58th #daily: some shots of another tinkering with epoxy (it’s not an experiment because past pieces don’t really count as controls and I’m changing too many variables at once). It changes from how it looks when I finished pouring it as the epoxy flows, powder settles, and ink diffuses.
A photograph of mostly blue epoxy in a hexagonal silicone mold on a silicone/fiberglass work mat. Deep blues, light blues, and greenish blue shimmer under the glossy surface of the epoxy resin. Three corners of the hexagon mold have some orange mica coloring them.
The mica powder has a sort of small-scale rough/bumpy looking “texture” or distribution, with a lot of pearlescence and a little swirliness. 1/3A photograph of mostly blue epoxy in a hexagonal silicone mold,on top of a little turntable, on a silicone/fiberglass work mat, a few minutes after the previous photo. In this picture, the orange has started curling inwards towards the center of the hexagon a little bit.
The mica powder has a much smoother looking “texture” or distribution, with a lot of pearlescence and a lot more swirliness. 2/3A photograph of mostly blue epoxy in a hexagonal silicone mold,on top of a little turntable, on a silicone/fiberglass work mat, a few hours after the previous photo. In this picture, the orange has curled further in towards the center. Faint traces of orange extend pretty far away from the corners. A hexagonal start shape is visible in the swirls of light blue in the center of the hexagon.
The mica powder has a very smooth looking “texture” or distribution, with a little less pearlescence and even more swirliness. The colors will probably to continue to move even a little bit more before the epoxy has cured enough to freeze them in place. 3/3 ike blue 2026

One last Day 46 (or is it?): The first frame of the animation, but at a decent resolution.
A computer-generated image. On a light blue background, there are a lot of blue hexagons of different shades of blue and different sizes. The centers of the hexagons are regularly spaced in a hexagonal pattern. The hexagons are largest and bluest at the top center of the image, overlapping each other and showing their transparency. Towards the bottom of the image, the hexagons are much smaller, do not overlap, and are colored more lightly blue. The sizes of the hexagons are derived from the distances of the hexagons from the center, and the colors are derived from the angular position of the hexagons around the center. ike blue 2026

44th #daily #blue #hexagonal art. Early post today, as I couldn't wait to play around with the code some more to make it do different things. I'm trying to be clever with the expansion/contraction and it's kind of working how I want, but it's still a bit wonky. #processing #creativecoding

I made my 14th platelets donation of 2026, yesterday. They gave me a special pair of socks for donating at least 12 times this year… the socks are not much of an incentive for me, and they’re not really blue enough for my style, but I still feel a little pleased/proud by them.
A photograph of a pair of socks. The socks have a variety of colors and patterns on them in a sort of patchwork fashion, including Red Cross branding, the text “Platelet Donor”, triangles, squares, stripes, a red heart in a light blue circle, and a yellow teardrop shape on a navy blue background, and more. The yellow teardrop shape symbolizes the yellow color of concentrated platelet fluid.
