Now that I finally have a phone that supports Android desktop mode, I'm finding out what it's like to do real work with a dang phone connected to a desktop display, a mechanical keyboard, and a desktop-grade mouse. It has plenty of rough edges but so far, it's quite credible.

I'm fine with "Ontario," but any body of water as big as that one has a lot of nerve calling itself a "Lake." It's like a middle-aged guy altering the tag on his size 38 jeans to make it look like a 32.

Working in the local library. As always happens when I'm all alone in the Quiet Study Room, I'm noting the irony that I've turned it into the loudest room in the whole joint. Until somebody enters, I'm listening to music through my MacBook speakers and sometimes singing along.

I don't know what's more surprising: that the porn industry managed to produce and release a parody so quickly, or that "Spider-Man: Brand New Day With Tony" is being screened at a drive-in of all places.
The "Now Showing" sign outside of the Wellfleet Drive-In Theater. The sign shows a double feature: Spider-Man: Brand New Day and Tony. The sign is of 1960s or 1970s vintage and the titles are composed of translucent slide-in letters. Below the movie titles, painted signs say "Flea Market Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday." The photo was taken in bright daylight through the window of a vehicle.

Ugh! I keep telling people, "DON'T buy things on impulse during Prime Day!" And then what do I do? I click that Buy button without thinking! NOW what the hell am I going to do with a three-pack of sensible, comfortable socks that I know from experience to be well-made and durable? I'm such a DOPE!

One of my favorite street interactions: when someone "apologizes" to me because their dog approached me for head scratchies during their walk, and I instantly sense that they're thinking "Yes, I _know_ my doggo is the most adorable and friendliest and most wonderful dog in the whole wide world."

Many of my friends here are fellow creators. They will experience some empathetic pity when I share that this weekend's goal is just to write an OK paragraph about myself and my credits. It is IMPOSSIBLE to accomplish this without feeling like a faded Southern belle in a Tennessee Williams play.

I came across a bash script that performs handy maintenance on my Linux notebook. I just wanted to capture it to a very simple Notes tool so I could grab it whenever I need it.

No such app was part of my Pop!_OS install. I couldn't find anything like what I wanted in its App Store, either.

We're at the point where (at least for very quick apps) it's quicker to just vibecode a new app than to find what you want.

Like, vibecoding an app is nothing new. Some people are kind of insufferable about it, to the extreme of inviting actual software engineers to point at them and shout "STOLEN VALOR!"

But today was the day that I rewired my processes. From now on -- at least on Linux -- if I can't find an app I need in just a couple of minutes, and it seems like something simple, I'm just going to close the app store window and open up Gemini or Claude. There's no longer a reason not to.

The classic writer's dilemma: I spontaneously wrote a 1200 word thing, and an 1800-word thing. Yay! But I didn't write the 1000-word thing that I intended to write, and which I really wanted to get off my to-do list today. (Not a "boo" but maybe not ideal, either?)

I took a last long walk before I'm likely to be shut in for two days. I picked up breakfast pastries for Monday and Tuesday, and groceries for a hearty Monday night dinner that will simmer low and slow in a pot all afternoon. I have a project to work on, a book to read…and a sense of resignation.

My range of emotions when I arrived at the library and saw the white smoke: (1) Surprise that I hadn't heard the sad news about the Library Pope; (2) Relief that the conclave had agreed on a new one so quickly; (3) Disappointment that I hadn't even made the shortlist (I checked my messages...nada).

Ok, I admit that the password to the security cameras on _my_ crown jewel collection is "LOUVRE," too. So maybe I shouldn't be so judgy. But in my defense, I don't have that word literally on a big sign on my front door. It's a much more oblique choice.

It's the obligation of an artist to be patient and thoughtful, rather than accept the first furtive flash of inspiration. (Also, that @museumofscience.bsky.social exhibit is so large that a selfie with my hand up one of the nostrils wasn't really possible. So, to hell with it: I went with "arty.")

The debut of Apple's big "Great ideas start on Mac" campaign happened during the same week as the demolition of the East Wing and the disclosure of Apple's financial contribution supporting it. I wonder if Apple Marketing regards this as Bad Timing, or _Perfect_ Timing?
Screenshot of a YouTube player window. The video is entitled "Great ideas start on Mac" and was posted to the Apple official channel. The frame is paused on an image of a MacBook screen, with an empty document. Closed-Captioning is enabled and shows a quote attributed to Jane Goodall: "Every story you love, Every invention that moves you, Every idea you wished was yours, All began as nothing."A pair of satellite images of the White House. An outline of the footprint of the East Wing shows the site before and after demolition,

In legal terms, this mini basketball hoop up on a phone pole is the very definition of an "attractive nuisance." Any sensible person walking by would stop underneath it and pretend to be a Catholic saint. If I'd been hit by a car, the hoop's owner would be held liable for my medical expenses.

Wow. This was another of those times then I gave Gemini a prompt and was so pleased with the result that I uttered a grateful profanity. (This was definitely the first time I've said "I'm very happy with my speaker headshot.") "Convert this photo to a 1-bit bitmap, using Atkinson-style dithering."

My first sighting of Roof Racc at night. Just chilling and contemplating his evening plans. He's been around the neighborhood for months. I'm sure he's clocked the dumpster schedules of all of the restaurants nearby. Some of them are quite fancy. Roof Racc probably eats way better than I do.

In fairness: It's embarrassing when a product fails during a livestreamed launch event. But IMO Meta and Google send a subtle message of "we're not afraid to perform a live demo." Apple's stuff always works flawlessly at their events because their launch events are always pre-taped and edited.

God...no way to respond to this. Where to begin? "Isolation" is one of the profound generational differences. In the 80s-90s, you hard to WORK to find "your people." A show like MST3K, made by people with a POV and outlook you recognized, was VERY BIG. Funny as hell, but also a beacon of sorts.
