Today I wrote 50+ pages, maybe 1 of which might get used, and you know what? I’m actually pretty okay with that. It is genuinely lovely getting to work on stuff you like. It takes a whole lot of pressure off your shoulders.

I agree!! Especially the D&D film. I was sad it didn’t make enough money both because I would’ve enjoyed a sequel and because it’s rare that kind of translation comes off so well. I was rooting for it to be recognized as a success among non-gamers. That’s what’s really needed for future licensing.

As a reader or an analog game player, I can engage with the universe of 40K in a ridiculous number of ways. As a videogame player or, soon, a viewer? Much more limited. They've identified the core, accepted it, and said play in the margins so long as it doesn't screw up that core where it matters.

I think GW have done this better than anyone, really. They have countless things in-universe that are basically marginalia, across every comparatively low-revenue media. But their base games? They keep to a core. And their licensed endeavors? The big ones also keep to that core, and reinforce it.

I think it's a feature AND a bug, depending on if I'm looking at the medium itself or the difficulties with adaptation. Like I'm absolutely team mutability. TTRPGs are good *because* of it. But at the same time I think you need to hone in on some core, any core, when it comes to adaptation.

One of the under-discussed problems with adapting TTRPGs into other media that really isn’t shared by anything else is the issue of “how do you adapt something that’s meant to be countless different things for different people into one thing without pissing off more people than you make happy?”

Yeah I mean I hate to say it but for most people a single subtask is likely sufficient. But the nature of most knowledge work is pretty straightforward. We just exist in the little part that’s not, where Excel still works better.
