Fig. 5: Estimated natal origins of olive ridley turtle feeding aggregations from Ceará, Alagoas, Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul/Uruguay, estimated by each Mixed Stock Analysis performed. Mean estimated contribution and 95% credibility intervals are shown for each potential source rookery. Asterisks: source contributions with statistical differences among MSAs.
Fig. 4: Representation of the population structure among Atlantic Ocean regional groups of olive ridley populations, found with the FST analysis. Red diamonds indicate rookeries with genetically described individuals; ellipses represent the different grouped regions (SWA: Southwest Atlantic - Red; NWA: Northwest Atlantic - Green; SEA: Southeast Atlantic - Blue; NEA: Northeast Atlantic - Orange) and lines indicate the relationship among them, with line width proportional to FST values (values shown near each line). Line width reflects the degree of genetic differentiation based on Wright (1949): thinner line represents low differentiation (0 - 0.05), thicker line represents moderate differentiation (0.05 - 0.15). Abbreviations: ANG: Angola; BEN: Benin; BRBA: Brazil – Bahia; BRES: Brazil – Espírito Santo; BRSE: Brazil – Sergipe; GAB: Gabon; GE: Equatorial Guinea; GHN: Ghana; GB: Guinea-Bissau; IC: Ivory Coast; STP: São Tomé and Príncipe; and SUR/FG: Suriname/French Guiana.

Fig. 1: Olive ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) study areas along the Brazilian and Uruguayan coasts. Zoomed areas (indicated by the numbers) indicate the specific sampling locations of olive ridleys incidentally captured in fish weirs (red square - 1), stranded on the beach (red lines - 2,3,4), or nesting in rookeries (green triangles - 2,3). Samples of turtles stranded in Espírito Santo are indicated by a red dot (3) in the ES nesting area (Guriri). Abbreviations: BR = Brazil, UY = Uruguay; AL = Alagoas state, BA = Bahia state, CE = Ceará state, ES = Espírito Santo state, MG = Minas Gerais state, RJ = Rio de Janeiro state, RS = Rio Grande do Sul state, and SE = Sergipe state.Fig. 2: Frequency of haplotypes (indicated by different colors) found for olive ridleys in the Southwestern Atlantic, per sampling region. Feeding grounds (white squares) - AL: Alagoas; CE: Ceará; RJ: Rio de Janeiro; and RS/UY: Rio Grande do Sul/Uruguay. Nesting grounds (black squares) - BA: Bahia; ES Nst: Espírito Santo Nesting and SE: Sergipe. Undefined (hatched square) - ES St: Espírito Santo Stranded.

Foxes In Love @foxes-in-love.bsky.social · 28/04/2025
A comic of two foxes, one of whom is blue, the other is green. In this one, instead of the foxes, we see a lifeless whale sinking through water.
Narration: When a whale dies, its body sinks to the bottom of the ocean. But this is not a time of sorrow.

A varying group of tiny little critters has gathered on the ocean floor, all peering up, some reaching up with whatever limbs they have, all cheerful of the magnificient bounty approaching them.
Narration: For the tiny creatures at the bottom, it's a miracle from above!

Holding varying pieces of whale carcass in their teeth, claws, or forelegs, the tiny creatures happily skitter away.
Narration: A feast that will feed them for months!

Finally, we reach the foxes. Blue is calmly looking at Green, who is looking at him from the middle of his massive pile of random apparel, items and knickknacks.
Green: ...And in my defense, the same applies to a really good thrift store haul.

Genetic analysis (mtDNA) identified 8 haplotypes, with CM-A8 and CM-A5 being the most common. We also observed a significant increase in the proportion of the CM-A8 haplotype with increasing latitude, indicating a positive correlation between latitude and its frequency.
