Before photo 51, RF ‘decoded’ photo 49:

But in a paper published today in the Journal of the History of Biology, Sponsel and Sutton draw attention to the earlier image, photograph 49, showing she made extensive notes about it despite a cosmetic defect. She recognized it suggested a helical structure and used it to calculate, for the first time, the length of each turn in the spiral—34 angstroms—and the number of bases “per turn of helix (if there is a helix).”

Ever since Oklahoma became the first state to adopt lethal injection in 1977, prison officials have tried to make executions appear like medicine: There are gurneys, IV lines and heart monitors. But lethal injection is a sinister impersonation of the medical profession. There is no patient, no consent and no healing purpose. Even the drug is miscast. In the hands of the physician, pentobarbital is a medicine. I use drugs like it regularly in my intensive care unit to sedate critically ill patients. In the hands of the state, pentobarbital is a poison. Pentobarbital is not a painkiller, and when it is injected by the state, no one can say when a prisoner stops feeling pain.

This medical impersonation hides a great deal. I have reviewed the autopsies of more than 200 people executed by lethal injection. In most of them, the prisoners’ lungs were heavy with fluid, often with froth in the airways. These are signs of pulmonary edema, which suggests that the prisoners could have felt as if they were drowning, even if some looked peaceful as they were dying.

Like many of her neighbors, Ms. Vuittonet had been worried about the streams of new immigrants coming across the Rio Grande during the Biden administration and had trusted that Mr. Trump would stop them. Although some Trump supporters held signs calling for “mass deportations now” during the 2024 campaign, Ms. Vuittonet never thought such deportations would include people she knew who had lived in the United States for decades.

“I knew that he was going to start deporting people, but that he was going to go after bad criminals, like true hardcore criminals, rapists, killers,” Ms. Vuittonet said, sitting in the small coffee shop she runs from the back of an antique store. She thought of her six children, who range from ages 6 to 12. “Of course I want the streets safe.”

But when her brother was taken to an immigration detention center earlier this year, just days after a scheduled check-in with an immigration official, she said it felt like a punch to the gut

“The reason a country like Saudi Arabia invests so heavily in developing a security partnership with the United States is for just this sort of eventuality,” said Mr. Ratney, the former ambassador.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia, the country’s de facto ruler, had reasons to be confident in that partnership. For years, his government has invested billions of dollars and extensive political capital in building personal relationships with Mr. Trump and his family.

But when the crown prince asked Mr. Trump last week to take military action against the Houthis, the president declined, according to officials with knowledge of the conversations.

Saudi officials and pundits have been clear that the kingdom does not want to fight the Houthis alone. That is especially true because an earlier military campaign that Saudi Arabia led against the group turned into a decade-long quagmire.

Saw the oldest surviving Ginkgo tree in North America today 🤓
A very large old ginkgo treeInfo plaque: The oldest surviving Ginkgo (Gingko biloba) in North America, this male (staminate) tree is believed to date from 1785 when William Hamilton planted two trees at his nearby estate, the Woodlands, and presented this specimen to the Bertram collection.

Native to China, the Gingko has been cultivated in Asia for its edible nuts and medicinal properties for thousands of years.

Morning re-reading: Stephanie Syjuco, ‘The Unruly Archive’ 🤓
Cover of Stephanie Syjuco’s The Unruly Archive — it is designed to look like an archival folder“This book simulates a type of forensics.

Like the process of physically excavating an archive … a search through a body that was embalmed and catalogued years ago. In this case it simulates what it is like to piece together a vision of an entire country of people — the Philippines, Filipinos, and by extension Filipino Americans — through the lens of the American colonial archive.”A historical photo of a woman — her face is obscured by a person’s fingersDefinitions of unruly (disorderly and disruptive) and archive (a place where … historical documents are kept)
