What does internal displacement tell us about the world we live in? Displacement rarely happens in a vacuum. It can signal wider instability. Understanding where and why people are internally displaced can reveal where risks converge and action is needed.

When disasters force people from their homes, many return within days or weeks. But as extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and intense, internal displacement increasingly lasts longer.

In too many countries, internal displacement is becoming increasingly protracted. Over the past decade, the number of countries hosting three million or more internally displaced people has tripled. For millions of people, displacement lasts for years, with few opportunities to rebuild.

Conflict and disaster displacement often overlap. Last year, 88 per cent of the countries reporting conflict displacement also reported disaster displacement. When they collide, people often experience cycles of displacement.

One decade. One trend. The number of people living in internal displacement has more than doubled since 2016. Year after year, the figure has grown and remains near record highs. 82.2 million people are displaced within their own countries. The second-highest figure on record.

Fragility fuels displacement. Displacement deepens fragility. The majority of internally displaced people live in fragile and conflict-affected countries, where repeated crises put growing pressure on people, communities and the systems that support them. #GRID2026

When people are forced to flee, most don't cross borders. They remain within their own country, internally displaced. Their number has been rising for years. Displacement disrupts live and carries lasting costs for communities and countries.

Every person forced to flee is part of a bigger story. Understanding internal displacement requires monitoring how many people are displaced within their countries, how often and why. Without reliable data, people risk becoming invisible and displacement becomes harder to address.

Disaster displacement is one of the most visible consequences of climate change. And the most vulnerable are often hit first and hardest. 📊 Data is a first step toward better policies and action. But it isn’t enough. We need climate action and finance that match the scale of the challenge.
