The guillotine wasn’t really for executing nobles, its main purpose was to crush political dissent.

Well if that’s the way you see it, then the government is also going to do that under single-payer. There’s no escaping trade-offs.

Yglesias derangement syndrome stikes again. It’s a very clear rule on this platform that you have to tell Matt to go eff himself first in order to express agreement with him.

How do these people think single-payer healthcare works. Hint: it also involves a lot of rationing.

It really helped that Obama was a moderate, which everyone seems to forget whenever it’s convenient for them to do so.

I read the comments to his slow boring blog pretty often and they sound pretty similar to Bluesky with a few more cranky conservatives hanging around. People can hate on his takes all they want, but I think they come from his genuine assessment of the political position the Dems are in.

Yeah if he doesn’t drop out that’s a pretty clear indication that he never really gave a shit about making sure the Dems won that seat.

I hate these dumb fucks. They literally gained ground with non-white and particularly Latin voters the last couple cycles, but they still can’t let go of their fact-free security-blanket racism.

He is typically credited with the successful campaign strategy used by Bill Clinton in the 1992 presidential election, which occurred after the Dems had failed to beat Regan or HW Bush in the three previous elections.

I agree that the dynamics won’t be exactly the same, but a tight margin can create headaches from both your left and center flanks. Just flagging it as a concern.

I’d be a lot more concerned if not for this point. The problem on the GOP side is that there are almost no examples of someone losing a primary for being too right-wing since the Tea Party. The fact that you can’t say the same for Dems is an encouraging limit on how bad things could get otherwise.

The margins in the House are probably going to be tighter from now on due to the gerrymandering war, so choosing dipshits in primaries might start to matter more. Just look at the problems Johnson has had getting routine legislation passed.

Because attack attack attack is a strategy that was already used against Trump in previous races and there’s a lot of understandable concern that it backfired and made people immune to hearing additional negative information about Trump.

Yes, you’re right we’re in a really shitty position because Dems and progressives have been complacent about the Senate for a long time now and not willing to do what it takes to compete in red states. The best time to stop that nonsense was 10 years ago but the second best time is right now.

Hey remember in 2009 when the Dems won SIXTY seats in the U.S. Senate. What if we tried doing that again instead of embracing this loser fatalist mentality and letting MAGA fascists run roughshod over the country. Sorry but you’re like the fourth person to give me this response and it pisses me off.

What? It’s very bad for Republicans that they have good odds to keep the senate even while their party is dragged down by one of the most loathsome and unpopular presidents in our history? The Dems should be able to meaningfully contest senate control every cycle. If they can’t we have problems.

That would be nice, but also I think it’s pretty important that Dems take control of the Senate this year. I don’t understand the complacency from people (not necessarily you) on this. The last two years of Trump’s term will be significantly less bad if Dems win both chambers!

This seems overly optimistic to me and I don’t agree. The fact that the race for Senate control this year in this political environment is this close is a really ominous warning sign for the Dems structural problems.

So are you saying the party should move right on econ/racial issues? I don’t think Dem voters are going to be any more pleased about that. But given the way the party’s brand has tanked and the way the party has struggled to compete in red-state senate races, I really think something has to change.

idkluthen.bsky.social @idkluthen.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
Is that the test case? Dems were losing Nebraska handily in the pre-Trump era too. The big problem is that we can’t compete in Iowa, Ohio, Florida etc. the way we used to.

idkluthen.bsky.social @idkluthen.bsky.social · 22/06/2026
That’s fine and all but it seems pretty bad that apparently we can only have a chance of maybe taking the Senate if we get lucky when the worst president in American history is self-immolating. What good are all these social policy commitments if the party can’t credibly contest power?

All markets are complicated because perfect competition doesn’t exist in the real world, but good luck trying to understand those markets without Econ 101.

Eh, it’s a complicated picture for sure, but the Econ 101 logic is still very relevant to the minimum wage. It seems that the size of the disemployment effect varies with context, and pretty much everyone agrees that you couldn’t expect to raise the minimum wage to infinity and see no job losses.

At the end of the day, I don’t really consider socialism and democracy to be compatible with each other, so in my view any functional democracy is highly unlikely to be socialist in any meaningful way.

I don’t consider the Scandinavian countries socialist. Many of them are very highly rated in terms of business climate. I know that many DSA types claim to only want us to be more like Scandinavia, but based on my observations of their rhetoric and behavior over the years, I no longer believe them.

That’s a pretty tame description of socialism. I doubt most DSA members would be comfortable stopping there. Also it depends entirely on what regulations we’re talking about, and a million other things. We should pursue policies that make sense and help people, not those that fit into an ideology.

I was replying to a tweet you made where the explicit argument you were making is that we should cash in on Trump’s unpopularity to run more left-wing candidates. Personally I would rather have better odds of beating MAGA and by a larger margin than elect more left-wing ideologues.

I don’t agree that it’s good for the party or country because I’m not a socialist and I think socialists are generally pretty bad, but I support their right to free speech and political participation.

Interesting, wasn’t aware of that context, except that I’ve heard someone on a gaming podcast say “actually, I like FF6 more than FF7” about a million times. I still think it’s pretty hard for anyone to deny that one-winged angel is an incredible track, regardless of what you think of the game.
