The WERELIS (Women’s Empowerment through Renewable Energy-Powered Lift Irrigation Systems) project is exploring a different approach: using Bhutan’s renewable energy potential to bring reliable irrigation water closer to farms, while enabling women to participate in & manage the systems themselves.

ICIMOD @icimod.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Across Bhutan, women make up the majority of the workforce sustaining agriculture and livelihoods. Yet they also carry many of the challenges that make farming harder. For example, Irrigation - one of the fundamentals of crop production, yet it remains out of reach for much of the country.

As ICIMOD Director General Pema Gyamtsho put it: "This is now a slap in the face and time is running out." The message is clear, reducing future losses will require stronger regional cooperation, faster information sharing, better science, and greater investment in resilience.

ICIMOD @icimod.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Now, governments, scientists, and development partners across the Hindu Kush Himalaya have come together around the Kathmandu 10 Action Points, a roadmap to strengthen monitoring, early warning systems, emergency response, and recovery.

1,400+ lives lost. 6,000 people still missing. USD 5 billion in losses. The Rasuwa-Gyirong flood was more than a disaster. It exposed how mountain hazards can trigger cascading impacts across borders, rivers, infrastructure, and communities.

As the Istanbul dialogue explores strong examples of cooperation worldwide, the experiences of air quality management in the Indo-Gangetic Plain and Himalayan Foothill region highlight how science, policy and finance, including national budgets, can work together to turn evidence into action.

While national priorities guide response, regional cooperation helps countries learn from one another.

ICIMOD @icimod.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
ICIMOD has worked with governments across the region to drive action on clean air. The Kathmandu Roadmap in 2022 and the Thimphu Outcome in 2024 have been crucial in giving shape and voice to regional air quality management.

ICIMOD @icimod.bsky.social · 22/09/2026
A country’s clean-air priorities are determined by shared science, policy exchange and financing – something that remains a challenge for countries in the Hindu Kush Himalaya.

Through a blend of practical exercises, and negotiation simulations, participants will enhance their skills to raise the profile of mountain biodiversity issues and the needs of the HKH region within the CBD and its related processes.

ICIMOD @icimod.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Over the two days, the workshop strengthened the strategic and technical capacities of HKH negotiators, with a particular focus on the CBD’s Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and preparations for the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the CBD (COP-17) in October.

To address these challenges, the International Centre for ICIMOD, in collaboration with Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law, UN Environment Programme and CBD Secretariat, has organised the “Regional training workshop for Conventional on Biological Diversity negotiators” from 16-17 September.
110
ICIMOD @icimod.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The region consists of major ecoregions and four global biodiversity hotspots. Despite this, the specific vulnerabilities of mountain regions are not always comprehensively addressed or reflected in CBD negotiations and relevant implementation frameworks.
110
ICIMOD @icimod.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Three decades have passed since the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) came into effect, yet biodiversity loss has not only persisted but intensified. The Hindu Kush Himalaya (HKH) region represents one of the most biodiverse and environmentally significant mountain regions in the world.

ICIMOD @icimod.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Protecting biodiversity is not only about what happens on the ground. It is also about ensuring that the realities of mountain regions are reflected at the negotiating table.
