Velella velella, a strange colonial hydrozoan. Millions of them washed ashore this week around Morro Bay, California. This is the northern hemisphere version - the sail relative to the main axis is at an angle of about 30 degrees. In the southern hemisphere, the angle would be about -30 degrees.
