Toshiro can hear it from his place aside, can hear the anger and emotion in his voice…but he can also hear that he is holding something back…they’ve been together long enough to understand that. So he stands there, not wanting to interfere or make it obvious he’s there, just waiting and listening.

Toshiro didn’t mean to overhear the conversation Byakuya was having with Renji, truly he didn’t. He does not make it a habit of eavesdrop on his partners conversations. He only was trying to make sure things were ready for the reception but heard their argument and stopped to hear them.
