Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 01/10/2026More insights from reading Golden Age comics: Superman will threaten to crack your head like an egg but Namor will actually go through with it. 011
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Aspects of the original Superman that fell by the wayside: He couldn’t fly — only leap great distances He worked at The Daily Star, not The Daily Planet If you were his enemy, he was liable to target your internal organs (heart, gizzard, etc.) 011
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 09/09/2026HERO ILLUSTRATED talked to Alan Moore in 1995. According to the article, Moore was once writing a screenplay treatment for Nicholas Cage. I know Cage is a huge comic book fan, so it makes sense that he’d reach out to Moore. I’d love to have seen a brainstorming session between those two. 1154
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 01/09/2026This week’s LANTERNS establishes that OutKast exists in the DCU. Thus raises many questions, one of which is — Andre 3000 would have totally been friends with The Forever People, right? 030

Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 16/08/2026It’s fun to read these, knowing that most of the stories were retconned into 616 continuity. Orrgo the Unconquerable lands on Earth and warps the minds of the humans around him…but that’s not going to stop Millie the Model and a pre-Hellcat Patsy Walker from having romantic misadventures. 010
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 16/08/2026I’m watching THE PRISONER, now that it’s streaming on the Criterion Channel. I don’t know why The Village’s location is considered a mystery. It’s clearly in Britain. Only the British would be this enthusiastic about umbrellas. 220
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 15/08/2026I’m reading Marvel’s August 1961 omnibus, which collects every Marvel comic that was published the month FANTASTIC FOUR #1 debuted. Apparently, Stan Lee was trying to wedge the word “hamfat” into as many stories as possible. We’re lucky Ben Grimm’s catchphrase didn’t become “It’s Hamfat Time!” 3247

Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 11/08/2026A part of me is starting to worry that my interest in 80s alternative comics is getting out of control. You know what’s good at silencing worries like that? Getting your hands on the full run of DALGODA 040
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 04/08/2026A curious news blurb from The Comics Journal #89: Pacific is going to reprint comics from the UK mag WARRIOR. This includes V FOR VENDETTA. That never happened, as Pacific shuttered in 1984. V FOR VENDETTA was picked up by DC and the rest is history. An interesting “what could’ve been” situation. 010
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 03/08/2026I’m reading the Len Wein/Dave Gibbons GREEN LANTERN run. One of the main antagonists is a scheming Congressman named Jason Bloch. I have to wonder…is this character’s likeness based on Jim Shooter? Has anyone asked Gibbons about this? 010
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 28/07/2026If you had the March 1984 issues of The Comics Journal, you read Matt Groening’s thoughts on modern comics You also saw a short blurb about an upcoming book called TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES from two guys named Eastman and Laird You probably had no idea you were reading about future billionaires 121
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 19/07/2026I signed up for The Comics Journal Archive. Here’s the last page and back cover of issue 79, from January 1983. You have an ad for William Messner-Loebs’s JOURNEY Followed by an ad for LOVE & ROCKETS Followed by an ad for RONIN. The beginning of the direct market era was like nothing else. 030
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 13/07/2026Sam Neill was always great but his performance in IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS is really something special. 120
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Alan Moore’s work is often about patterns. His stories can find connections between seemingly unconnected ideas. It is in that grand tradition that I give you… 000
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 02/07/2026Does Universal know how much I would pay for the “watch PHANTASM with a Minion” experience? 000
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 01/07/2026I’ve been reading a lot of early Alan Moore, lately. I’ve gotten to SKIZZ (art by Jim Baike). The strip has a supporting character that looks a lot like Jason Statham. The real Statham would be a teenager when SKIZZ was published in 2000AD. Did he see this and think, “I want to look like that guy”? 120
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 30/06/2026I’m re-reading V FOR VENDETTA for the first time in decades. Still a great book. Sadly, the dramatic impact of one key scene has been subsumed by the part of my brain that turns everything into a Simpsons meme 130
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 24/06/2026I don’t accept the idea that progressive socialism is extremism. I believe that, since Reagan, America has been under an extreme and ruthless version of capitalism. A socialist movement is a form of moderation against the extreme conditions we have been living under. 000
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 17/06/2026And yet, even he was not afraid of letting the world know he was bald. If Taibbi appeared on a show that reached millions, as Letterman's show did in the 80s, would he appear sans hat? 000
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 08/06/2026Despite its weaknesses, I think ROBOCOP 3 holds up better as a film than 2. I suspect the film’s poor rep comes from the fact that it was released two years after TERMINATOR 2, and thus the “kid befriends killer robot” story paled in comparison. It was ROBOCOP VS. TERMINATOR all over again 000
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 08/06/2026Now onto ROBOCOP 3. Robert John Burke replaces Peter Weller. It’s sad to lose Weller but, with Jill Hennessy also joining the cast, the film does become the strangest LAW & ORDER crossover of all time. 100
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 07/06/2026ROBOCOP 2 also features Frank Miller as a proto-Walter White. P.S. did anyone ever discuss the idea of Frank Miller starring in a John Lennon biopic? 230
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 07/06/2026Inspired by the RoboCop commentaries on @blankcheck.bsky.social I rewatched ROBOCOP 2. I know people who prefer this to the original. I don’t agree, but I get where they’re coming from. There’s way more Phil Tippett SFX. The film is very interested in the sci-fi tech. I get how that’s appealing. 110

Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 02/06/2026By 'Klingon prison,' do they mean I'll get to meet Iman and kick an alien in the knee (which means I actually kicked him in the balls)? If so, you'll see me there at the Grand Opening. 010
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 27/05/2026This is how DC (National) primed readers for Jack Kirby’s Fourth World books. Question: When comic book readers saw “The Great One is Coming” did they think Jackie Gleason was getting a DC mag? Remember, DC was already publishing comics starring Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis 234
Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 12/05/2026Happy anniversary to all who celebrate. (P.S. this scene blew me away when I was a young teen, because it captures what it was like to have ADHD) 000

Ian Brill @ibrill.bsky.social · 07/05/2026That annual features Shrapnel, which was Dave Wyndorf’s band before Monster Magnet. More Marvel/Wyndorf trivia: Monster Magnet’s DOPES TO INFINITY is probably the only album with a song named after a Marvel character and song that inspired the name of another Marvel character 021
