Congratulations to my wife and nine-year-old son for successfully trapping this litter of kittens in the neighborhood. We’ll be fostering them until they get fixed and adopted.

The Jerome Park Reservoir has been drained for maintenance and now the Bronx has a nice summer shorebird spot. I just ticked my county Baird’s Sandpiper.

I took the camera out in the yard yesterday to see what insects can be found in my garden that’s comprised mainly of native plants. A kindly @inaturalist.bsky.social reviewer has confirmed that this is a type of hover fly called an Eastern Calligrapher (Toxomerus geminatus).

I found a Hackberry Petiole Gall on my hackberry tree! This means a tiny insect called a psyllid has injected enzymes into the tree through its saliva causing this growth to occur that the psyllid lays its eggs in. There are a few different species of gall psyllids that use the leaves of this tree.

The spiderwort and eastern bluestar are a nice complement to my non-native rose that I don’t get rid of because it does a nice job of covering up the rain barrel. #bronx

I learned recently that there are tons of observations on iNaturalist with no identification attached. Any schmo like me can filter by “unknown” observations and assign really basic IDs like “plant”, “arthropod” or “reptile”.
