This is a great book about poverty and power, full of insight and humanity (and a few conclusions I disagree with). The final sentence, aimed at middle-class liberals like me, “When it comes to social inequality in Britain, what if poor people aren’t the problem”.

One Nation Tories might dispute Kemi Badenoch’s claim to be a traditional Tory. She’s definitely one of the “nasty” Tories that Theresa May failed to consign to history #NastyTory

Having all benefits stopping at a certain income is a daft tax law, but prioritising it when many families are struggling shows the Tories favour the wealthy over the majority of ordinary families #Tories #JustIgnorePoverty

Kemi Badanoch tapping into the old Tory myth that poverty is due to feckless living - next she’ll be advocating Poor Houses and public flogging of beggars

No riots about David Sullivan, or most other white male (alleged) sexual predators - so this is nothing to do with racism?

I love Eurovision, but I'm not watching this year. Eurovision is Europe having a fun night out – passionate, loud, diverse, quirky, self-important, sometimes annoying, mostly inclusive, full of history and tradition, and a good party. Like Russia, Israel does not share these values at this time.

I love Banksy. The plinth and location among old Imperial statues matter as much as the figure blinded by his patriotism. It’s art that starts conversations

Labour MPs prefer infighting to broadcasting some major legislation, like abolishing hereditary peers, a generational change in Employment Law, Renters Act, etc.

To me the story is that an elite sports organisation like Spurs didn’t already have a sports psychologist on their books, or are football clubs still catching up with other sports?

Why do almost all UK politicians act as if we have a significant navy? Is it because the majority of UK citizens still don’t accept the reality of our mid-ranking place in the world?

No mention in The Times of the £3.5 billion debt that Morrisons is managing - easier to blame it all on Rachel Reeves

We need to stop illegal immigration, but this language is unhelpfully divisive. Mahmoud should read Jo Cox’s “more in common” speech again

Maybe the spoilt ballot total suggests the way to get on the Irish President ballot, that favours ‘establishment’ candidates, needs review

Very sad to hear that this will be the last Durham Lumiere. There have been so many spectacular displays over the years and a great excuse to revisit Durham

Nothing says “old fart”, like a tie-wearing PM criticising acts at Glastonbury. Just say you have more important things to handle and let the Home Secretary deal with it. #Glastonbury #Starmer #dodgyleadership

There’s an article about (mostly UK) #poetry in The Economist. It includes this snarky paragraph. I don’t like it, but I have read more published poems I didn’t rate recently. Any thoughts on the current quality of UK poetry?

Having studied the US constitution at university, it’s alarming to see it under attack in this and other moves. However imperfect, the constitution seeks to balance power and protect democracy and citizens

I despise Trump and his policies, buts let’s stick to facts. A one day blip is not a trend. Here’s the last 6 months, the last 2 when we knew Trump was taking over. Let’s see if this downward trend continues
