My latest for Substack, in a sense a follow-up to ‘The Art of Judgment’. May not get me on everyone’s Xmas card list, but hopefully some will find it interesting. open.substack.com/pub/ianpace/...

If you want to buy one book to remember Arnold Whittall, make it one of these three.

Very sad to announce the death of doyen of British musicology and music analysis Arnold Whittall (1935-2026). He had been ill since the beginning of the year. I’m mourning not only an intellectual giant and valued mentor but also a close friend who we saw for the last time on Saturday.

This is the final version of my new short piano piece Tren: Został nam odebrany zbyt wcześnie (2026), written in memoriam of Jonathan Powell, which I played at the memorial concert on Sunday. I will place it on my City Research Online portal later today.

I'm reposting a few favourite blog posts onto Substack. Here is the first, written after the death of David Lodge, and considering the world portrayed in his novels through the lens of the changing landscape of British Higher Education. open.substack.com/pub/ianpace/...

So - here is my *second* post on Tracey Thorn/Everything But the Girl Fascination. Now a re-reading of it from the perspective of the beloved and the former lover, revealing a pattern of possessiveness and control approaching the coercive. open.substack.com/pub/ianpace/...

Also a great paper from Eddy Campbell on the influence of piobaireachd on Boulez, which was explicit, especially relating to the idea of subsuming a line in grace notes.

During Boulez’s tenure at the New York Philharmonic, one disgruntled letter and Boulez’s response. From a great paper in Edinburgh by Gabryel Smith.

Following representation from multiple academic freedom groups, King’s College London has dropped the requirement for an EDI statement from their advert for a lecturer in music history. Compare the two versions below. www.kcl.ac.uk/jobs/122145-...

Boston University, via the library, have been asking scholars to sign a ‘citation justice’ pledge. Unsurprisingly, this says nothing about the most glaring omission in many academic articles today - citations of sources in languages other than English.

The guidance does allude to specific hypothetical examples relating to a) pro-Palestinian protests; b) a blog from a trans activist.
