That moment your long awaited qpcr probe arrives after 10 days and you realize it’s not labeled at all bc you forgot to specify fluorochromes but they put it through hplc anyway and charged you the same as a labeled probe.

Science friends! I have some data that directly relates to scuba diving from a microbial standpoint that I’d like to disseminate. Does anyone have recommendations on appropriate journals/outlets? #science #scuba #diving

when nobody can realistically do that means they probably hired unqualified “reviewers” just to make the journals look good with rapid turnaround.

I’ve published with them a couple of times. On the second paper, I began to get suspicious about the review process. 99.9% sure both reviewers were administrative folks in the publishing office who used pro forma review comments (clarify number of replicates etc. 10 day guaranteed review time

I’ve been asked to double my teaching load, so I’ve put together a syllabus for a class in Marine Phycology. Excited to revisit my roots. Hopefully the very pre med heavy bio majors find it attractive!

I grew up queer in marine science too. I’ve come out at different times on different continents, but share the story of many of these amazing scientists.

Sorry but >10 months total review at Pee**J is excessive, especially considering review of the revised version (minor changes) has taken more than 5 months. What is happening? Worst journal experience I’ve ever had.

Flew home yesterday across the world, and had to pass through TSA. Understandably, they make you take her remains out from your bag and swab it for detection. Still brought it back again watching her come through the x ray machine and down the secondary inspection aisle.

Somewhat telling about a country. In settling the affairs of my mum. Today while dealing with banks, they all asked for my occupation. In the drop down list of options “scientist”, “professor” and “academic” were not possible. Settled on “secondary teacher” #australia #notreadyforolympics

It’s been a week since my mum passed. Still hurting. Grateful for the support of others near and far. Every day I’ve been watching the sun rise, thinking of her, and then toasting her with a dram of scotch each evening.

What is this obsession with leaving the window shades down on flights these days? It drives me nuts… the only time they’re open, briefly, is when the plane is pulling into the gate.

Visiting my childhood home to do some paperwork. If you asked me why I ended up as a marine scientist, this was a pretty strong influence. I learned to dive here, used to spend days exploring, and walked a thousand times through the national park nearby. #noosa

Just finished watching Netflix’s Lord of the Flies. Feels weirdly contemporary. Some of the best child acting I’ve seen, and the third episode incredibly poignant for any lid growing up queer. Highly recommend.

That she’s having trouble. She has dementia and doesn’t know how to tell them, who to tell, or how to summon them. I’m so tired of this, I need to go home. I thought having a loved one enter aged care would help with my anxiety by having her cared for. I predict I’ll be back in Australia

They responded that they’ll keep her in pull-ups so she wont have to get up to use the loo as frequently. But these increase UTIs. She needs assistance to use the loo as well. When I asked to see a nurse at the home, they told me that they come every week, 4 days from now. And she needs to tell them

Heading home today from Australia. Mums in aged care. This morning she has another UTI, which is happening every 10 days or so. It is caused by poor hydration, she says she drinks a lot of water but in reality drinks not much at all (growing up I didn’t either). I had a word to the care staff

Moving my mum into aged care/nursing home tomorrow, direct from hospital. Any advice on what to do, bring, or prepare? Of all things it’s the name labeling her clothes that seems to be having the most impact on me emotionally.

Because of demand, once a spot opens up, you have to sign permanent contracts with the care home, sign over hundreds of thousands of dollars and be on the line for monthly costs, normally within 24 hours. And if you don’t the hospital charges $700 per day.

Ian Hewson @ianhewson.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
And extraordinarily high costs (equivalent to the US, but you also have to invest $750K or more and lose 2% of that per month). And those are government subsidized rates, where patient to carer ratios are about 30:1. Home care costs $14K per week here (yes, $56K per month).

I’ve been stuck in Australia for 3 weeks trying to arrange aged care for my mum, who fell and suddenly needs it. For a country that prides itself of free health care, free education, gosh this place is the pits for looking after seniors. Almost no aged care beds, huge demand from an aging population

I hope that the authors have the opportunity to perform additional work to seek further evidence of its role in sea star wasting disease.

I concur with the authors of this piece. There are many unanswered questions from the Prentice et al. paper last year on sea star wasting, and it is my opinion that there is insufficient evidence to say that sea star wasting is caused by Vibrio pectenicida FHCF-3. www.nature.com/articles/s41...
