A new New York Times/Sienna poll is showing Democrats ahead in some reliably Republican states. For those of you who don't follow this, the New York Times/Sienna poll has shown high reliability. It is a quality sample of opinion. As shocking as it is to see Democrats competitive in Alaska and Texas thanks to high quality candidates and good strategy, the Kansas result is truly shocking.

Education Reform: What works, What Doesn’t
Very interesting article this morning from the NYTimes, which spoke to dozens of education experts on how to improve student achievement. Initiative were ranked by how much they cost and how effective they were at improving over-all student math and reading scores. A bit of a surprise: cell phone bans. The issue gets lots of public attention, but doesn't really have much of an impact on student performance.

A stark warning to Saskatchewan about private, for profit education:
Education is not an app. It's not a franchise. It's not a short-term scheme. It is a cross-generational investment in our collective future. It is a long term play to help young minds think critically and make their best possible contribution to our collective future. Education is a public service. It's not a mechanism for making a buck.

Leverage the things they say are the most important. Use US Treasury Bond holdings to send a message. Didn't know we had an export tax on oil and natural gas once before. Could happen again. And Visas. All of these are excellent responses to American escalation that we all know is coming.

Visuals are very important in story telling. They must enhance, not detract...from the main message. However, sometimes you get the whole story in one graph. Power is concentrated in UK politics. Most debates, conflicts and disagreements are about class. One percent of the population attends either Oxford or Cambridge. Just over half of the new UK cabinet attended these elite institutions.

Job Numbers in Saskatchewan–Digging A Little Deeper.
Here's a very nuanced analysis from Ron Styles, a very smart and experienced voice in our province: Overall, Saskatchewan has lost 3,200 jobs between June of 2025 and June of 2026. However, dig a little deeper, and the story becomes even more disturbing. As Ron mentions in this post, you have to look beyond the provincial totals to get the full picture of economic growth in Saskatchewan.

The correct response to crass, right-wing insults. The UK Education Minister has the correct response to abuse: make t-shirts. And for the record, if you eliminate an historic tax credit for rich private schools, you are a class warrior. And I mean that in a good way.

It's a classic government communications tactic as old as time itself: Flood the zone. Put all the bad news out in one day. Release Crown Corp. reports the same day as a major Provincial Auditor's Report. Hope nothing sticks. Ministers should be fired over this. Voters should not forget. Record debt at SaskPower. Poor management and budgeting at Public Safety Agency. A sorry record of incompetence.
