For this week's #HomeMadeMusic, I've never even tenuously written a song about the weather, so I'll cheat and share this ultra-lo-fi Japanese language cover of Brian Eno (and Cluster)'s By This River — which I always read as a couple sheltering from the rain under a tree. youtu.be/UB9iXSAGcWY?...

Our last Kyushu music #BandcampFriday post is this compilation. Initially a pandemic fundraiser for our favourite Fukuoka venue, it features nearly all the Kyushu acts we've worked with and it's still interesting as one label's window on a region's music. call-and-response.bandcamp.com/album/883km

Next #BandcampFriday link from our archives, looking at Kyushu artists is Zibanchinka’s album Hatsubai Chushi. They should’ve been huge but imploded before the initial buzz could stick. Disarmingly intelligent garage-punk from Kagoshima that hits HARD: call-and-response.bandcamp.com/album/hatsub...

Hyacca were (along with Mir) the band who really got Call And Response Records motivated in the early days. Their second release from us, Hanazono, is a series of tighter, more refined detonation as than the first, but if anything more devastating. #BandcampFriday hyacca.bandcamp.com/album/hanazono

Really looking forward to this. I read Ian's first book Quit Your Band (Musical Notes From the Japanese Underground) earlier this year & it was the exact kind of thoughtful insight into a unique music subculture that hooks me. Genuine interest in & passion for underground music shines throughout.

Right, except Sanae Takaichi's government doesn't want to send all foreigners home: they want to keep us as a permanent underclass with no civil rights, who can be exploited, kicked publicly for social media likes and then deported before we claim the benefits we've been paying into with our labour.

And stoked to finally have a physical copy of the damn thing in my hands.
The book “Tokyo Doesn’t Exist - Not a guide to music or cycling in Japan” by me, Ian F Martin. The cover has a sort of tasteful but energetic, abstract swirl on it.

I've been getting caught up in a lot of 90s themed stuff lately and one thing that's really stood out for me after immersing myself in the music of that era is that by far the best (and most consistently terrific) band to come out of Britpop and all its parallel scenes was Super Furry Animals.

My #HomeMadeMusic this week on the theme of "an end" is really a song about someone trying to end something but being unable to do so for long, and on some level already knowing that even before they leave. soundcloud.com/rizladeutsch...

I am a medieval warrior. I get through a dozen swords a week and spend half my questing time crafting new ones. My neighbour, a farmer, spends more time crafting hoes than he does actual hoeing. I guess it's just an unavoidable fact of nature that metal tools break after only a few uses.
