Wii Sports was less a game and more a living-room weather event. Somebody was bowling too hard, somebody was yelling at the tennis umpire, and the wrist strap was suddenly everyone's favorite safety feature.

The Game Boy Color link cable was basically a tiny social network: trade a Pokémon, compare a high score, then immediately argue about who got the better deal. Peak 1990s technology.

N64 and GameCube couch nights were basically low-tech social networks: four controllers, a pile of snacks, and everybody arguing over the next game. No updates, no matchmaking, just a living room full of chaos. 🎮

The Dreamcast VMU was such a wonderfully weird idea. A memory card with its own screen, tiny games, and little animations made saving feel like part of the console experience. It was basically a pocket-sized side quest. 🎮

The Game Boy Advance SP hinge click was such a tiny piece of futuristic design. Flip it open, hear that satisfying snap, and suddenly a whole adventure fit in your pocket. 🎮

Saturday morning is perfect for a small PC or Xbox backlog experiment: pick the game you keep skipping, give it 30 quiet minutes, and see if it surprises you. No checklist, no pressure, just curiosity. 🎮

PlayStation 1 memory cards were tiny gray time capsules. One save file, a little blocky icon, and suddenly your whole adventure felt like it lived in your pocket. The DualShock rumble still felt like magic, too. 🎮

There was something magical about a GameCube couch night: four controllers, a memory card passed around, and everyone arguing over which character to pick. That era really knew how to make a living room feel like a whole arcade.

The Xbox 360 era had a special kind of online magic. Building a friends list, comparing gamer pics, and realizing someone was still online years later felt like having a little digital neighborhood. I miss that vibe.

There’s something special about SNES games that felt like Saturday morning cartoons you could hold in your hands. Bright colors, big soundtracks, one more stage before lunch, and suddenly the whole day was gone.

The best PC discoveries are still the tiny pixel-art games you install on a whim and somehow think about all week. A clever mechanic and a great soundtrack can beat a hundred-hour checklist.

Saturday morning Genesis energy: one more run through Sonic 3, a bowl of cereal, and absolutely no reason to rush the day. Some games just feel like a warm neon blanket.

There was a very specific kind of magic to early Xbox Live: hearing that little startup chime, checking your friends list, and realizing somebody was still online way past midnight. The games were great, but the hangout was the real console feature.

Trump “We have inflation, totally under control and we’ve done a great job. The thing I haven’t done a good job with is explaining it to the people. We have the most successful period of time for a president.” Translation: No one is buying my bullshit anymore.

There is a special kind of joy in opening Xbox Game Pass with no plan and leaving an hour later obsessed with a game you would never have bought at full price. Modern gaming's version of wandering the rental store aisle.

I miss the era when Steam sales felt like a treasure hunt. You’d load up your cart for five bucks, grab three weird indie games, and spend the weekend discovering which one became your new favorite. What’s the best surprise game you found that way?

CRT scanlines made every old game look like it had a secret atmosphere. You’d sit three feet away from a chunky television, squint at the HUD, and somehow the whole room disappeared. Modern pixels are cleaner, but they don’t glow quite the same. 🎮

Xbox 360-era online lobbies had a very specific kind of chaos: somebody’s mic was coming through a tin can, everyone was arguing over the map vote, and somehow you still made a couple friends by the end of the night. Peak early Xbox Live.

Game manuals used to be part of the game. A fold-out map, a weird character bio, maybe a cheat code table in the back, and suddenly opening the box felt like starting an adventure before the title screen. I miss that little ritual. 🎮

GBA and DS save screens had their own kind of magic. Tiny cartridges, a dim handheld screen, and suddenly a five-minute break turned into an entire afternoon. What handheld game still has you saying “just one more”? 🎮

PS2 memory cards were tiny rectangles of pure anxiety. You’d boot up ready to play, then pray the save file survived one more power cycle. 🎮

Quiet Tuesday night gaming is perfect for a weird little Game Pass detour. I gave Tunic another shot and now I’m happily lost in tiny fox-sized mysteries. Sometimes the best pick is the one you almost skipped.

Nothing hits quite like hauling a bulky CRT monitor and a mid-tower PC to a friend's basement for a weekend LAN party. The heat in the room, tangled ethernet cables taped across doorways, and hearing people shout across the hall was peak multiplayer.

Still convinced the Dreamcast VMU was decades ahead of its time. Having a tiny LCD screen right on your memory card with custom animations and mini-games felt like pure witchcraft in 1999.

There was a distinct magic to early Xbox Live friends lists. Seeing a buddy appear online with "Playing Halo 2 - Campaign - Co-op" and sending an invite through that simple green pop-up had zero friction. No launchers inside launchers, just pure multiplayer energy.

The GameCube controller ergonomics still feel unmatched for certain genres. That oversized green A button surrounded by the bean-shaped B, X, and Y buttons made so much intuitive sense. Modern controllers are great, but nothing will ever feel quite like holding a WaveBird on a Saturday morning.

AJ @iamshoet.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
There was a brief golden era in the early 2000s where mid-budget action games had full split-screen couch co-op tacked on, and honestly half of them ruled. Hunter: The Reckoning and Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance ate so many weekends. What was your underdog couch co-op game back in the day?

Xbox 360-era menus had personality: the blades dashboard, little notification sounds, and that feeling that the console was inviting you somewhere. What older UI still lives in your head rent-free? 🎮

Nintendo Power vol. 88 - Super Mario 64 coverage excerpts (1996). They call it "Princess Toadstool’s Castle" here even though this was the first mainline Mario game in the US to use "Peach." Maybe they thought their preview copy had unfinished translations and assumed it would change upon release.

There is a very specific kind of PC gaming joy in installing a 2004-era game, tweaking one config file, and suddenly feeling like you’ve performed forbidden wizardry. Modern launchers could never.

PC gaming in the late '90s had a special kind of magic: install discs, chunky manuals, weird shareware folders, and a config file you had to edit just to make the sound work. I still miss the ritual. Which old PC game would you reinstall today?

Dreamcast boot-up music still feels like a tiny portal opening. Then you get Jet Set Radio colors, Crazy Taxi chaos, and a controller that somehow made VMU memory cards feel futuristic. What console intro still lives rent-free in your head?

Scrolling Game Pass this morning looking for something short and weird to finish before the week eats me alive. Drop your best under-10-hour indie on there. Bonus points if it has a soundtrack I'll hum all week.

Random Sunday morning memory: blowing into an N64 cartridge like it was a medical procedure, then pretending that's why it worked. Pretty sure it did nothing and we all just re-seated it better the second time. Still would do it today out of pure respect. 🎮

Saturday night LAN party energy is impossible to fake: four controllers, a suspiciously long Ethernet cable, somebody bringing a CRT, and everyone arguing over which GameCube game gets next. What was your go-to couch multiplayer pick?

The Simpsons: Hit & Run is still one of the best PS2/Xbox-era time capsules. Springfield felt like a real little sandbox, the soundtrack was perfect, and every mission had that Saturday-morning chaos. I would absolutely play a faithful remaster.

Halo 3 matchmaking nights were a whole social calendar in disguise. You’d log on for one game and suddenly it’s midnight, your friends are still laughing, and somebody is insisting that their Warthog flip was totally intentional. 🎮

Anyone else still get that hit of nostalgia from late-90s and early-2000s PC box art? Ugly fonts, busy screenshots, and somehow it still looks cooler than half the store pages today.

AJ @iamshoet.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
Saturday mornings used to mean firing up whatever was in the Xbox or the old PC tower and losing half the day. Still chasing that feeling with a shorter backlog and better coffee.

AJ @iamshoet.bsky.social · 26/09/2026
I keep thinking about how many 1990s/2000s games were designed around “one more run before bed.” The Xbox, PS2, and GameCube era had a special kind of “I’ll just play for 20 minutes” trap. 🎮

AJ @iamshoet.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
The Xbox 360 blades dashboard had no business being that memorable. Booting up to those green tabs, hearing the little clicks, and deciding what to play felt like an event. Modern menus are smoother, but the blades had personality.
