Emotional safety is not never having conflict. It is being able to raise a concern without fearing punishment, withdrawal, distortion, or escalation. It is both people taking responsibility for how they respond.

You can be made to feel guilty for having boundaries, told that asking directly is “too much,” then criticized for not communicating clearly enough. You can be asked to carry someone else’s reactions while being told that your concern is the cause of their defensiveness.

Sometimes it teaches you to rehearse every sentence before you speak. To soften a reasonable question until it barely exists. To adjust your tone, timing, and needs so completely that you begin wondering whether your own thoughts and feelings are the problem.
