the quote tweets on this one are a doozy.
a post dated July 30, 2026 from David Brothers. It reads, "I learned 'deadpan sense of humor' from an X-Men comic as a kid and said 'that's my side!' at a very young age. then social media came along and my life has been complete hell on earth ever since

Live at BCAF:
A sales sheet for a zine called OTHER PEOPLE'S PETS. It reads:

OPP...how can I explain it? I'll take it and frame by frame it, to have y'all all jumping, shouting, saying it! O is for "other." P is for "people."
Scratch your temple...
The last P, well...that's actually simple!

yeah, it's all good! "oh no, don't throw me into that briar trap! 👀" #1 is more for me than anyone, but it cracks me up every time I see it. perfect tension breaker and goofy bit. This set spans the early '90s through the 2020s, I believe. The Battle Angel Alita one in here has a fliptake in it, too

most recently, for #3, I liked this bit from Hiromu Arakawa's Daemons of the Shadow Realm. it's three slam dunks in a row. I like this type of bit cuz it's character-building, but it's also v. fun to see someone with impeccable everything (she's an all-rounder and future hall of famer) draw "poorly"
in a page from Hiromu Arakawa's Daemons of the Shadow Realm, three characters and a pair of floating teeth have a conversation. An adult man with glasses explains that he "wouldn't know [your] brother if I saw him, though." The other characters—two teen girls and a pair of floating teeth—quickly draw three portraits of the brother. The brother's sister draws him handsome and sparkly. The sister's friend draws him as a monster (poorly). And the floating teeth do an excellent portrait in a classically Japanese style. All three pictures surprise the brother in different ways.

when I first started writing about comics, I was somewhere close to the bit on the left, from Flex Mentallo. lately, I've been somewhere closer to what Boy has to say on the right, from The Invisibles.
two panels from Flex Mentallo, by Frank Quitely, Grant Morrison, Tom McCraw, and Ellie de Ville. In them, a man huddles next to a wall in a rainy alley as he speaks on a mobile phone. He says, "OH yeah, and those paracetamols...what? I don't know...a whole bottle, I think. What? Well, of course I'm committing suicide, what did you think? I just wanted someone to talk to, that's all. While I'm waiting. I just wanted to talk about the comics, see? All those shitty, amazing comics...a page from The Invisibles volume 3, by Frank Quitely, Grant Morrison, John Stokes, Daniel Vozzo, and Todd Klein. In the first three panels, King Mob meets Boy and her daughter. In the next three panels, King Mob relates what Boy said to him to Jack Frost, who in turn delivers them to a friend of his in dire straits. Jack says, "'I stopped needing to save the world,' she said. 'Saving is what misers do...'" Is that profound or does it just make no sense, man."

I fell down a hole and googled some stuff. Curious about what mainline DC is shaped like lately. There are more Batman & Batman-related comics than comics with people who aren't Superman or Batman. Six of the eleven non-Superman/Batmans debuted in 2026. Brutal environment to compete in. Short grass.

Deathstroke the Terminator
Emperor Aquaman

Superman

this is one of the best genres of art. (trees.) this reminded me of a Hirohiko Araki cover to JoJo's Bizarre Adventure with similar trees. I'm pretty sure I've got a pinterest or folder somewhere with a bunch of images like this. lotta people draw great trees.

in League, Kevin O'Neill & Alan Moore have the best take on Frankensteins since Mary Shelley. Mina: Most people insist that it's your creator who should be called Frankenstein, while you should be referred to as Frankenstein's Monster. Frank: And what, that's supposed to make me feel better, is it?
in a page from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen volume 4, by Kevin O'Neill, Alan Moore, Todd Klein, & Ben Dimagmaliw, a fancy party is going on. Mina Murray, formerly Mina Harker from Dracula, speaks to Frankenstein about his position as co-ruler of a kingdom while they stand on a balcony. Frankenstein praises his bride, and her choice to construct further Frankensteins for company. Mina, seizing upon his turn of phrase, says, "Other Frankensteins? Most people insist that it's your creator who should be called Frankenstein, while you should be referred to as Frankenstein's Monster." As the camera pulls away from the awkward moment, Frankenstein replies, "And what, that's supposed to make me feel better, is it?"

On the remainder of the page, the party goes on.

I think that this is functionally identical to the Shonen Jump approach, with adjustments for locale. Jump is aggressive about tailoring series to trends, trying to make them more popular based on surveys, & canceling them when they don't meet the mark by chapter 3. The machine is efficient, rigid 🧵
a quote from Comics Beat: The Story That Should Terrify The American Comics Industry:
"At Image the longest running series by a single creator - Savage Dragon - is seen as something of one-off eccentricity. Most other new series are published in the "media pitch" format: six or eight issues, just enough to spark a movie or a single season of a streaming series. Geoff Johns' Ghost Machine imprint has said they want to go against this and create series that go on and on - from what I've seen they've been successful but it's too early to tell if there will be a breakout."

thinking out loud: this bit from Watchmen has been on my mind. I think it's the most purely super-heroic choice in the book, Batman telling Superman that they Don't Lose in Porter/Morrison JLA. It's probably the moment I think about the most. It's not Ditko, but it gets Ditko (to my understanding) 🧵
a crop of three panels from Watchmen, by Dave Gibbons & Alan Moore, with colors by John Higgins. after receiving word that the grand plan to save the world will result in mass death, Rorshach looks into camera and says, "Joking, of course."

As Rorshach turns to leave, Nite Owl says, "Rorshach...? Rorshach, Wait! Where are you going? This is too big ot be hard-assed about! We have to compromise..." Rorshach replies, "No. Not even in the face of Armageddon."

Limited palette, incredible effect I looked at that while doing these, trying to be more intentional with less. colored pencils; ink brushes
a scan of two drawings by June Brigman & Stan Drake of Patsy Walker Hellcat leaping over the rooftops of Marvel's New York, accompanied by a horde of cats.
the top image is colored in shades of purple, orange, and yellow. The bottom image is monochrome, save for Hellcat.

Good Devils: Don't Play Fair With Evil collects "Good Devils," "Fight Like Hell," and "Go Back," stories @nickdragotta.bsky.social and I did after East of West ended and ahead of Absolute Batman. These came from chatting about Gil Scott-Heron, comics, and music. Big "two turntables and a mic" feel.
the cover to Good Devils: Don't Play Fair With Evil, from Dragotta & Brothers, on sale October 1st from Image Comics. It's an homage to the poster for The 36th Chamber of Shaolin, with a martial artist in the center in an active pose, with a boxer and a man with an assault rifle in panels on either side of her. Flavor text says, "Fight with me! One to one! Man to man!" and "No escape from New York!"

I got to see Aja Kong live at a Kaori Yoneyama (The Woman Who Loved Wrestling More Than Life Itself) show with a friend. She was dressed as Evangelion Unit-01 for part of it. Yoneyama was dressed as a cake. It was great.
at the end of one of Kaori Yoneyama's YMZ wrestling events, the wrestlers pose together for photos. in the front row is iconic pro wrestler Aja Kong, dressed partially as Evangelion Unit-01. next to her is famously un-retired pro wrestler Kaori Yoneyama, dressed as a cake to celebrate a wrestling anniversary. the dozen or so people around them are dressed as an Angel from Evangelion and the cop from Terminator 2, in addition to normal clothes. A sweater pervert and mixed martial artist, Hikaru Sato, is also present.a close-up of a dented can at the end of one of Kaori Yoneyama's YMZ events. Aja Kong used it to stagger someone during the match, opening them up for a critical hit.

panel 5 of this bit from DKSA is tip-top superhero comics for me, the exact juice I want from the books. I'm way out of the loop lately, but at the peak of my reading, this vibe was rare. remains a fave. Miller & Varley were cooking.
a page from Frank Miller's Dark Knight Strikes Again Noir, without Lynn Varley's colors. In it, Hawkboy explains that his parents died together as lovers and says, "Thanagarians do not believe in fate. We do not believe that anything is beyond the power of bone and muscle and will. I do not accept these deaths. I do not accept this crime." The Flash and Catgirl react with pain and empathy. Batman says that he'll help that achieve retribution.a page from Frank Miller & Lynn Varley's Dark Knight Strikes Again. I think Frank Miller has a remarkable handle on what makes superheroes exciting, both in terms of heroics and characterization. This bit from Dark Knight Strikes Again Noir leapt out at me. We didn't see much of Concerned Father Superman back in this era, right? It sings here, though. Panel 3's good
a page from Frank MIller's Dark Knight Strikes Again Noir, an edition published without Lynn Varley's colors. in it, Supergirl recovers from using her heat vision. as she does, her father Superman speaks to her and says, "Lara. What sort of world have I given you?"

today's #makeaterriblecomicday2025, and I teamed up with some old friends to make a little short story called "Superman: eug ene sia." I cut a copy of All-Star Superman to pieces, individual panels or rows, and then made it make sense. It's a Superman fanfic, about the dangers of...well, you'll see.
01:
a page of comics made up of cut-up pieces of All-Star Superman #1, from Frank Quitely, Grant Morrison, Jamie Grant, and Phil Balsman. it's a three-panel page, the first of four pages total. Credits follow at the bottom.
1: In B&W, the camera focuses on sci-fi buildings. A voice is saying, "...we've run exhaustive tests."
2: In B&W, Superman walks alongside a gaudily dressed scientist. The scientist says, "Photosynthetic giants, bizarro worker drones...I dedicated PROJECT resources toward building a new race of superhumans." Superman replies, "Smart thinking."
3: In B&W, a planet is threatened with destruction. A caption reads, "Doomed Planet."
02:
a page of comics made up of cut-up pieces of All-Star Superman #1, from Frank Quitely, Grant Morrison, Jamie Grant, and Phil Balsman. it's a four-panel page, the second of four pages total.
1: In B&W, Superman flies near the Daily Planet building. "Great Caesar's Ghost!" someone shouts.
2: In color, Lex Luthor looks at the camera and says, "It's time to get serious about killing Superman. Don't you think?"
3: In B&W, Clark Kent and Lois Lane have a conversation under an elevated train. Clark Kent says, "I just don't know where my self-esteem would be without you." Lois Lane replies, "Alone in front of the television. All this stuff, Clark."
4: In color, Lex Luthor grabs a man and says, "Three months ago, I looked in the mirror and I realized something."
03:
a page of comics made up of cut-up pieces of All-Star Superman #1, from Frank Quitely, Grant Morrison, Jamie Grant, and Phil Balsman. it's a seven-panel page, the third of four pages total.
1-4: In color, Superman flies across the surface of the sun. Lex Luthor narrates, "I know he arrived on Earth from the planet Krypton. I know every cell in his body is a living solar battery, evolved to store raw energy from the sun. But the temperature at the solar chromosphere is 6000º fahrenheit."
5: In B&W, Perry White looks at his staff and says, "Investing heavily in water. Damming more than fifteen rivers. With intent to profit from a global water shortage brought about by tampering with the sun."
6: In B&W, Superman looks pensive and says, "No one must know. There are...things I have to do first."
7: In B&W, Lois Lane and Clark Kent cross the street. Clark Kent bumps into someone and says, "Whupps!" Lois says, "Who's dying? Don't be so morbid, Clark. Anyway, a big country lummox like you? Your skill for self-preservation is almost a superpower in itself."
04:
a page of comics made up of cut-up pieces of All-Star Superman #1, from Frank Quitely, Grant Morrison, Jamie Grant, and Phil Balsman. it's a three-panel page, the last of four pages total.
1: In color, a scientist says, "Superman is through the corona but conditions are deteriorating. There can't be much time."
2: In color, Superman explodes.
3: In color, Lex Luthor raises his fists and says, "Thank God."

rewatching Naoki Urasawa being horrified by the sheer weight of Yoshikazu Yasuhiko's accumulated talent on Manben for motivation. I love "Sometimes it's tough. Not this time, though. I knocked it out the park here. Honestly, it's iconic. But yeah, sometimes I have to draw it twice before it's right"

@marissadraws.bsky.social @cheryllynneaton.bsky.social @thekarlapacheco.bsky.social good luck at the show this weekend. yesterday, I found some old photos from back when I had no idea how to use flash, and seeing you three on the same page here and at the same show now made me happy:
a photograph of two instax photos, one featuring comics colorist Marissa Louise in a thrilled pose, and the other featuring comics writers Cheryl Lynn Eaton & Karla Pacheco in a loving embrace. Both photos are poorly lit, but in opposite ways. it's charming.

just today, these posts made me frown and curse in appreciation, classic gasface reaction. "uuugh, how are they this good?" kinda vibes. bsky.app/profile/maxi... (sensational) bsky.app/profile/zebk... (game I already wanted, had no idea of the connection) bsky.app/profile/javi... (on another level!)

with peace & love...outside of it increasing my body of knowledge, no. it's just a job. My zealot's approach to church/state means I don't really think about it outside of 9-5. our podcast Mangasplaining did tho. Reading 90 books one didn't pick but must discuss can make a better critic of anyone 🧵

1 Never fear or disrespect your age like society wants you to do. You earned those years, and every day above ground is a blessing, even if it’s a hard one. 2 If my 20s where were I learned how to be an adult, my 30s are when I finally became one. Every year that passed made me more free to be me.
“ Any advice you someone who is about to turn 30 soon? What should I look forward to?”

I’m 2500 words deep on an essay about how Pa Kent saying, “He’ll be okay, won’t be? The boy,” in All-Star Superman chapter six hit me. I don’t have an ending yet but it’s easily the most real moment in Superman comics, and personally surprising it hit that hard, cuz Superman is Just Okay To Me

Last one of these for the night. The app sends automatic prompts too, and they’re all like this. Anyway, everyone wants to play Smash Bros, obviously
