Mornin'. I'm reading this as an ebook, a tale of spies in a vast, vaguely Victorian fantasy city with a deep history. Not read the author before and I'm loving the writing which is sharp, specific and idiosyncratic in its detail, punctuated by found documents. Like the exact opposite of AI slop.

The interview with Majel Barrett from the same issue. (I did my best with the alt text but had to spread it across the images because of character limits.)
From Hollywood a series of special reports

Reporter Stephen Payne

The Pilot episode for 'Star Trek - The Next Generation' has now been aired in the States. In Britain you can catch a trailer for the video release on the tape of Stallone's Over the Top. Last issue Majel Barratt (the Producer's wife) told us about her part in the series and some of the hopes. This issue she follows up with more background details.

Star Trek has been imitated by other tv shows as well.

MAJEL When Gene first started doing this show I remember we had a bunch of friends that we would go to writers' parties with, an awful lot of them. I remember they got together once, all these writers, very good, excellent writers, Gene said, "You bastards you've taken the only workable plot and story-line for Star Trek" and nothing else works, 'cause he took the wagon-train to the stars, and of course that is the final frontier. They said it good naturedly but they always tried to come up with another science fiction premise that you could do a television series from, there really aren't any.

The editor checks out the new set and was much impressed!

Majel Barrett

I mentioned that the British tv show Doctor Who was perhaps an exception and said also that it was a little wizard. Which promoted

MAJEL I think we've got a little bit more novelty, even the character that I played, there seems to be a lot more humour in this one. I know the first episode that will air has a tremendous amount of humour in it, so we're lightening up some, but the problems are still going to be monumental. The problems will still be there, but they will be dealt with in a very realistic way.

What do you think of the idea of transferring it from film to video tape and putting on some of the special effects?
MAJEL It is cheaper to do that way, there is nothing wrong with it as long as the results come out and as long as you can get that film edited and cut and put together it doesn't matter. They're still filming it on 35mm and it will be cut from the 35mm. It's so easy to have the tape and then throw it away.

Mind you, the same could be said about the old Star Trek because it is constantly being reshown.

MAJEL It is, but everybody's made their own cuts by this time, it's such a chopped up look. The originals just aren't there so somehow or other the newness of it or seeing out on regular video tape, done professionally, seems to be the selling point.

On costumes. We are back to the pyjama look.

MAJEL We'll try something a little bit different each time, costumes, uniforms change from time to time.

Do you think it's a good idea to go through syndication rather than through the network because there are less restrictions?

MAJEL Fabulous. Gene wouldn't have done it the other way. He wouldn't do it. He said "No more of this intervention. That's the reason, I'll do it but only if it's done in syndication, because I will not be dictated to by a bunch of networks". I won't tell you how he said it either! I think the syndication idea is great, especially as we're in over 170 markets which is 94 per cent of the population or the viewing public. I think this is more than is hit by ABC NBC or CBS on a single series. ABC has 30. some stations have taken off two of their prime-time shows and put Star Trekin, and NBC has done the same thing, and so has CBS. I think CBS has done fewer, 17 or so, NBC 24 or so. It's rather fantastic that they're just taking what the network has offered them off and sticking Star Trek in. It's unheard of, but it seems to be catching on too.

Fox TV originally vied for the idea of bringing back Star Trek.

MAJEL They sure did, but the same story went. Gene wouldn't do it.
It was that way round rather than Fox TV changing their minds?

MAJEL It wouldn't have made any difference. As long as somebody else was going to dictate to Gene what was to be done and what was to be talked about and not talked about there was no chance of doing it. So this way it's being done. It's being done right.

Gene got moved slightly sideways when they did the films, so he must be quite pleased being brought back to do that. Was that Paramount's idea that they definitely wanted him back doing Star Trek as such.

MAJEL Oh definitely because he has basically the final say on what does get done and what doesn't get done. I think Paramount knew that it would be much easier to do. I don't know if they would even have thought of going ahead and doing it if he hadn't done it. As far as the movies are concerned, Gene is again the consultant, but he just doesn't want to go further with it. The first movie was a big disappointment to him. It cost such a bandle of money and it wasn't seen on the screen. There were so many things going on at that time that it was all mixed up. He had just had it. It was almost like nervous breakdown time and he didn't want to put himself through that anymore. In turning it over to Harve, who's a highly competent person, a good man to have in there, who really understands Star Trek so much, they made a very very wise choice and wise decision. I hope Harve is happy doing it, certainly everybody else is in having him there.

You mentioned the light-heartedness that has been brought into the series, is that anything to do with the success of the fourth film?

MAJEL Oh no. It wouldn't have anything to do with that. This was inherent to start with because we found that in doing the series before that people seemed to make better contact with each other when they were having a better rapport with each other, when they were having little fun things aside and acting as people do rather than as a regiment.
I think that's the way Gene saw it so he decided to inject this in it and it becomes real, now we are a family. How you inter-relate is very important in this particular one. Of course you are going to have a lot of mirth and a lot of humour to make it real. And it's going to be real, you are going to believe this family is up there in space. I hate to use that because of the space family has been done before but this is a mission type of thing and it is a family.

One of the concerns some of the Star Trek fans have is that all the news that's coming out, they are saying it sounds like Battlestar Galactica and not Star Trek.

MAJEL No, it's not even close to Battlestar Galactica. I'm not exactly sure what their mission was but I would say that Battlestar Galactica came fairly close to trying to get to, in many many instances, to Star Trek. From that point of view perhaps it might be something like it. How would it be the same?

They were saying there was an older captain, they have the families aboard and there is an intelligent child around, all of which is likely to restrict the action.

MAJEL Oh with the child around. But he is not a child, he's a genius child. So he has a function and is not being treated as a child. He is being treated, as the youngest member of the cast, sometimes who is a little underfoot because of his youth. It's not because he acts that way, he acts as a fully-fledged officer and we'll find that much more so as the series goes along.
