I produce the podcast from home. Two cars out on the road, with two race reporters collecting interviews. I then piece a story together, write a narrative script, record that script, edit it into a coherent shape, day after day. Here I am doing it in 2022, late at night, deep in the Pyrenees.
Iain Broome sat on the floor outside a Pyreneean house. He is wearing headphones and cap, and has a laptop on his knees. Inside the house is in darkness, but the outside is lit by a lone street lamp.

Reading The Wax Child for book club while off work recovering. I like the writing. All rather grim though for a sunny Tuesday morning.
Iain’s hand holding The Wax Child by Olga Ravn. Cover features a black and white framed image of a woman in a black dress. Her face is obscured by a red and yellow shape that looks a bit like… fire? Beyond the book, a sunny Sheffield garden and a sneaky glimpse of Iain’s compression stockings.

So like this, perhaps. Combination of original posts and the existing newsletter, along with linkposts where the title links directly to the source article/web page (as shown here).
Screengrab of what the Plain English Club website may look like as a link blog. Shows a three-column layout: menu on the left, a stream of blog posts in the middle, and a sign up form and tags on the right.

Much-needed couple of hours in the hills for a bit of a fresh air. Very lucky to have all this on our doorstep. (Houndkirk > Burbage > Long Causeway for fellow Sheffield folk.)
Iain Broome selfie with a rocky trail behind, lovely thick bracken either side, with some woods in the distance and a glimpse of Sheffield beyond that. Iain is wearing a cycling helmet, a too-expensive thermal jacket and the grimace of a man who may be better served inside and out of the cold.

Absolutely glorious evening for a solo ride on the bike. I live in a big city, but it took just 30 hilly minutes to get here.
Iain taking a selfie, squinting in the low evening sun, wearing a black cycling helmet. Behind him are the rolling green hills of Burbage Valley, a slightly rocky trail in the foreground surrounded by grass. A part-rocky and well-trodden trail that disappears into the distance, surrounded either side by the grass and bracken of Burbage Valley.

Some pretty decent advice from author Lauren Groff, which I read while staring and despairing at my eternally unfinished second novel.
Quote from Lauren Groff that reads: "I think writer's block is an umbrella term for a series of very different pains. There's the biggest one, the writer's block that comes from a fear of imperfection, which can be combatted by a writer carefully training herself to let her work be messy and impermanent. I write all first three or four drafts longhand, and usually end up putting them away and starting over without even rereading them. I embrace the shitty first draft and wait until I have a very firm sense of the story before I even think about putting it on the computer, because the typeface looks too permanent and unchangeable to my eyes. Have the humility to know that your work is always flexible, that it can always be bettered."

I have officially opened an Etsy store... ...for my excellent wife's circus typography digital art prints. They make great letter art birthday gifts for kids. Good wall decor. Many children's bedrooms. Anyway, also a chance to test out my SEO skills. www.etsy.com/shop/circusl...

I mean I’m as pleased for him as anyone but.
Close up of envelope. A first class stamp to the right with a stamped sentenced to the left that reads ‘Congratulations, Rory McIlroy on completing your career Grand Slam!’

Update your style guides. New bullet points just dropped.
Sign nailed to a fence with an Anglesey Towing crest in the centre. On the right of the crest is a list of services with a standard left-aligned bullet point style. On the left of the crest, however, is a magnificent right-aligned list of services that has the bullets on the right of the individual items.

Absolutely loved listening to my old pal and work chum Rich Wells talking about layers, collage and creativity at Creative Mornings Sheffield. Still such a lovely event and the perfect way to start a Friday. ☕
Rich Wells sitting on a high stool giving a talk at Creative Mornings Sheffield. Next to him is an equally tall desk with a monitor displaying his slides. On the screen is a photo of covered-up graffiti, an act that in itself creates its own kind of art. A Creative Morning Sheffield sign is propped up on a shelf that sits above some cushioned seating and to the right, large windows let the light in on a gorgeous, sunny winter's day.

Just stumbled upon one of my favourite photos. My identical twins casually watching TV when they were little. They stood like this for about 15 minutes. 😂
Two small children from the back standing watching TV, dressed differently but clearly indentical twins. One has his arm around the other, but kinda inside his T shirt having entered through the neck hole. Very cute.

After days of hosting and navigating a non-stop barrage of enjoyable but exhausting childcare, I managed to get out into the Peaks yesterday. And I liked it.
Iain has a big smile and is riding his lovely bike on a rocky trail above Stanage Edge in the Peak District. Behind him, fog is partially covering a wide, hilly landscape mostly covered in thick, dark brown bracken.

I'm not a cycling expert, but one thing I can tell you is it's fairly bad news when you have more punctures than spare inner tubes. It involves walking. Much sadness.
Iain in the foreground wearing a black cycling jersey and a big frown. Behind him, his lovely green and yellow bike is leaning against a wall. The rear tyre is off and leaning against the frame of the bike. On top of the wall is a beige cycling jacket and a collection of sorry bike repair equipment. There are soggy brown leaves all over the ground and the opening to a water source of some kind behind the wall.

Here I am in 2022 interviewing a couple of riders on top of yet another mountain in the Pyrenees. This was for the Trans Pyrenees race not the Transcontinental. Amazing experience.
Three silhouette, one Iain holding a microphone and two cyclists. One cyclist is carrying their bike while the other has theirs propped against a fence post. Behind them is low cloud hovering over a valley in the Pyrenees mountains, two peaks poking out above.

Got there, briefly, in the end.
Iain half-smiling while wearing winter cycling jacket and black helmet with a pink cap just peaking out the front. Rolling hill of Burbage Valley covered in brown bracken behind him. A section of rocky bridle way is visible just over his shoulder.

Sure, I'm rooting for Bluesky, but I don't think it stands a chance until this button is changed to sentence case.

Love this unofficial guide to @bsky.app from @debbieohi.com, which also happens to be an excellent use of Obsidian Publish. 📝 publish.obsidian.md/debbieohi/bl...
