Iwata: Why was that?

QUOTE:
Q: And where does Link’s name come from?
Miyamoto: It’s not a very well-known story, but back then, when we started designing The Legend of Zelda, we imagined the fragments of the Triforce as electronic chips! It was meant to be a video game that would take place both in the past and the future.
Because the hero was linking together both eras, we called him “Link”, after the English word. But in the end, Link never went to the future and it remained a heroic fantasy game. We can even say there’s absolutely nothing futuristic in the game! When Zelda first went 3D there were no rules on how to make 3D games in the way there are now, and it was my first time making a Zelda game, so, in a real sense, I had no idea how to properly create a 3D Zelda game. We had a blank slate. We would think of something, try it, and if it didn't work, do it over.

At that point, the different sub-teams … had been working independently and in parallel, so my work was less about adding my own ideas as it was bringing together and consolidating what everyone else had done. Q: What motivated the choice of such an open, systemic world [for Breath of the Wild]
Aonuma: The wish to create an open world game came shortly after Skyward Sword was finished. We realized that the way you flew from one area to another, with no opportunity to walk instead, had frustrated a lot of people who wanted to know what was hidden between the regions.
One of the greatest thrills of the Zelda series lies in exploring and looking for hidden things, so after a few preliminary tests, we reckoned that the Wii U had the power we needed to create a satisfying open world—one that would allow players to visit the entire world with no loading times. Everything stemmed from that intention.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:2e7f2uvcguv4d5qxqnyjmk32/bafkreifhoftn3kiq44wnkhdh3ptyvlmmj62r6rhhadlaxnduvko4z7thdi)

Rogers: “I don’t need programmers,” I said [to Yamauchi]. “I need money.”
”How much?”
”30,000,000 yen,” I said, about $300,000. It was the biggest number I could think up on the spot. He reached across the table, shook my hand, and we had a deal. …
Yamauchi played the game [Microgo1, 1987] once. Or I should say that he told his underling, who was holding the controller, where he wanted to put his moves. Yamauchi had never held a Nintendo controller in his hands before.
He easily defeated the program, and said that it was not strong enough for Nintendo. No amount of explaining how it was a miracle that I got his 8-bit computer to play Go at all was going to change his mind.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:2e7f2uvcguv4d5qxqnyjmk32/bafkreigpcnv2vhh7fq735xgptww4ce22pivea73uhhra2ec27ahz5ukht4)

Iwata: There are people who feel FPS games are too difficult. I think that quite a lot of Japanese people feel this way–why do you think this is?
Miyamoto: I really don’t know what the reason could be. …
If there is something simple which someone can find enjoyable, the same joy can be experienced by anyone on earth, I believe. … For example, when we were working on Wii Sports, people in America kept telling me that there was no way [it] would sell in the States.
When Wii Sports finally went on sale though, the games appeared to have even stronger appeal in the US. … You start to see that there really isn’t any difference in what east or the west find enjoyable.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:2e7f2uvcguv4d5qxqnyjmk32/bafkreia3yjputkbpzad2ilumvdfavg2vx25724ernhcsksyqbkf2idtfyq)

Iwata: The things Nintendo does should be limited to the areas where we can display our greatest strengths. It’s because we’re good at throwing things away that we can fight these large battles using so few people. Yamauchi taught me that.
If we couldn’t pare things down, we’d never be able to compete with giant companies like Sony and Microsoft. We can’t afford to diversify [the business].](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:2e7f2uvcguv4d5qxqnyjmk32/bafkreicfaon2our3vr7yvpmw3rt37xvfnysoet3olv2gmr67ikisrhully)

Iwata: With my heart set on doing something for the Famicom, pretty soon I found myself visiting Nintendo Headquarters in Kyoto.
I was in my early twenties. Dressed in a suit I clearly wasn’t used to wearing, I showed up out of nowhere, just some newbie, and said ‘Please, let us [HAL Laboratory] work on something.’ I felt a little bold asking for work like that, but in retrospect, I realize they were making themselves vulnerable too.
They enlisted us to program software for their games. This was the start of my relationship with Nintendo. Some of the early Famicom releases such as Pinball and Golf were made by me and the folks at HAL.](https://cdn.bsky.app/img/feed_thumbnail/plain/did:plc:2e7f2uvcguv4d5qxqnyjmk32/bafkreiey74mycipsbfeywreyhecbldrrlocnomq4xke3hyqwc4ljhmtgk4)

Iwata: If a kid puts a game console in the basket of their bicycle, then has to make a sudden stop, the console can come flying out—and it’s not going to land on carpet.
So I told them to make it so [the Wii] could survive being dropped from 1.5 meters onto concrete.
