OTD UK Earthquakes. 07:15UTC October 7, 1690 M5.2 Caernarfon, N. Wales. Little is known about this earthquake other than the felt area (London-Dublin) matches that of the 1984 M5.4 Llŷn Peninsula Earthquake, suggesting a similar location and magnitude.
Very approximate location of the 1690 Caernarfon earthquake. Background Image: BGS 1:1,500,000 Tectonic map of Britain, Ireland and adjacent areas, Pharaoh et al. 1996.

OTD UK Earthquakes 03:22UTC October 06, 1863. M5.2 SW of Hereford. Damage in Hereford, Ross, Hay, Monmouth, Abergavenny. Felt Lake District - N. France. Probably associated with the Neath Disturbance. Effects in Kent described in a letter from Charles Dickens to his sister-in-law Georgy Hogarth.
Approximate location of the 1863 Hereford earthquake. Background Image: BGS 1:1,500,000 Tectonic map of Britain, Ireland and adjacent areas, Pharaoh et al. 1996.Effects in Kent of the Hereford 1863 earthquake described in a letter from Charles Dickens to his Sister-in-Law Georgy Hogarth

[Sidenote: Miss Hogarth.]

GAD'S HILL PLACE, HIGHAM BY ROCHESTER, KENT,
                                          _Wednesday, Oct. 7th, 1863._

MY DEAREST GEORGY,

You will see by to-day's _Times_ that it _was_ an earthquake that shook
me, and that my watch showed exactly the same time as the man's who
writes from Blackheath so near us--twenty minutes past three.

It is a great satisfaction to me to make it out so precisely; I wish you
would enquire whether the servants felt it. I thought it was the voice
of the cook that answered me, but that was nearly half an hour later. I
am strongly inclined to think that there is a peculiar susceptibility in
iron--at all events in our part of the country--to the shock, as though
there were something magnetic in it. For, whereas my long iron bedstead
was so violently shaken, I certainly heard nothing rattle in the room.

I will write about my return as soon as I get on with the still unbegun
"Uncommercial."

                                                  Ever affectionately.

OTD UK Earthquakes: 01:33:35UTC September 29, 1986. M4.1 Oban, Strathclyde. Felt Glasgow-Southern Syke. Two foreshocks the preceding day and three aftershocks were also felt. The Oban Times declares Oban “shaken - but not stirred” Earthquake probably associated with movement on the Great Glen Fault.

OTD UK Earthquakes: 00:25 June 7, 1931. M6.1 Dogger Bank, North Sea. UK’s largest historic earthquake. Ellen Bradley in Hull, "unnerved as a result of the shakes”, heart attack next day and died. Felt across British Isles and NW Europe. Possibly associated with the Outer Silver Pit Fault Zone. ⚒️🧪
On this day, June 7th, back in 1931 was the UK’s largest earthquake for which we can reliably estimate the magnitude. Occurring below the Dogger Bank in the North Sea, to the east of Bridlington was an earthquake with a magnitude estimated at 6.1. This would correspond to about 20 centimetres of slip on a fault 20 kilometres long.

The felt area included the whole of the British Isles and much of northwest Europe, as far away as Denmark. The church spire at Filey was twisted with chimneys and plaster damaged around Bridlington Beverly and Hull. There are also reports of ‘earthquake lights’. The only recorded fatality was one Ellen Bradley in Hull, "unnerved as a result of the shakes”, apparently had heart attack the next day and died.

Great article. As a side note, someone needs to teach Graham Stringer MP some seismology. The Richter Scale is open-ended at both ends - so it’s impossible to be off the scale. M10+ earthquakes are theoretically possible, and at the other end, magnitudes just become increasingly negative.
"You've got a man whose support is off the Richter scale in unpopularity at one end," says Mancunian Labour MP Graham
Stringer. "And a man whose popularity is off the Richter scale at the other end."

Start of my thirty-ninth year at Keele University. First in the Department of Geology, then Department of Earth Sciences, then Earth Sciences and Geography, then School of Geography, Geology and the Environment, now School of Life Sciences. Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.
My ‘home’ for the last thirty-eight years - the ‘Will Smith’, a building actually named after two William Smiths, one the Father of Stratigraphy, the other an earlier cartographer and drawer of town plans.

My office is in the older, white part of the building to the left behind the metasequoia, the newer brick-faced part is on the right behind a low hedge.

The university still hasn’t replaced the single-glazed windows with metal frames, that don’t shut properly, in all that time.
