okay i gave myself time to let the emotions sit in and my thoughts develop and it's still admittedly not perfect and very much so a stream of consciousness writing words review but i had to say SOMETHING about unbeatable that wasn't just a single post, so here's the steam review:

my steam review of unbeatable; recommended, 13.5 hours playtime.

as some context for this review; unbeatable is a game that i have spent years waiting for, one of the rare games i found myself truly excited for. i've been listening to music from the official uploads of the OST for years. i've seen these character designs and style and had it in my head for a long time. i knew i would like it from the start from my time between the demo and white label, but i wasn't sure what i would actually be getting with the full game. i'm writing this about 20~ hours after finishing story mode and putting in some arcade mode playtime since. i have a lot of thoughts to let out, and this isn't very structured or coherent.

i got everything i wanted and more. unbeatable is a truly human experience made by a team of incredibly talented artists who had a story they wanted to tell, delivered in a medium that allows for a ton of creativity, directed in a way that's truly their own. every bit and piece of this game is oozing with passion and love. there's something uniquely raw and pure about this experience that's difficult to put into words, which is about as fitting for a game about music, making something, and struggles through life as it can get.

i won't lie, my first hour or so with the game worried me. the story mode, as of launch, has some bugs in it that are easy to encounter. the opening to the story in a vacuum feels confusing as hell, which continues into a segment that feels draining (on purpose, thankfully!). there's a few moments that don't flow quite right to me, and a few areas with some noticeable lack of polish. this game isn't perfect, but you truly cannot let perfect be the enemy of good. this game is a lot better than just "good." despite the rough start, i had an amazing time with this game.

every bit of the game past the intro pains feels amazing. the story it's trying to tell truly shines through, and the emotional beats of it resonate on a level very few things have or will with me. i don't think everyone will quite have the same level of connection with the story i did, but that's ok. this game isn't trying to appeal to everyone, and that's a good thing. unbeatable knows what it is, and it doesn't want you to think it's anything else for a single moment. unbeatable's message and story is worth your time.

and as for arcade mode? not every chart is perfect, and the visual style of the game does lead to some struggles reading at times, but i enjoy playing it every time i start up a new song. it's a fun take on a taiko or muse dash style 2-button rhythm game with it's own unique gimmicks. the original soundtrack this game has in it is stellar, and has way more variety than i expected. it's not all hits, but it's certianly far from being a crippling amount of misses.

this game is a 10/10 for me as far as enjoyment goes, a 8/10 for me as far as the technicality of the game goes. i will recommend everyone at least try it and stick with it long enough to get past the beginnings, because unbeatable is a game that is worth writing a steam review that has too many words in it for. very few games can claim that, for me.
