1) Mishnah Yoma 8:9 (Transgressions between God and a person, YK atones. Transgressions between a person and one's fellow, YK does not atone until one appeases one's fellow). It centers community & personal accountability 2) Tikkun olam. It often devolves into being so broad as to be meaningless

I vote for a new grammar rule: “Lay down” henceforth is for placing objects and reclining oneself. It’ll always be a transitive verb. “Lie” in all its conjugations will only refer to telling falsehoods. It’ll be intransitive. Who’s with me?

There’s a great convo around the need to mourn/feeling versus the letter of the law (Elazar & Ithamar mourning Nadab and Abihu.) dovetails into a discussion of personal feeling versus communal duty. Both sets of brothers were sitting in emotion.

Couple ideas: My mind immediately went to the kashrut laws. Think about our very bodies as sacred spaces and as having avenues for holiness. What we bring into them is what we get. There may be something there (in full acknowledgement of the realities of shechita) that a lot of our laws of…

Charlie Kirk is as much a victim of the NRA and their resistance to sensible gun laws as is any victim of gun violence. We cannot suspend our ethical philosophies even toward people whom we consider our adversaries. The flames of political violence of any form must be quenched

When news media incentivizes rage and guns are as accessible as they are here, it's like setting up the powder-keg and handing someone a match. Blood is blood. When will politicians stop allowing ourselves to be victims of their own stupidity and myopia and instead work to resolve this crisis?

I have seen countless school shootings in my lifetime. How many dead children is too many? When does the bloodguilt of children become too heavy to lift from one's shoulders? When will we stop accepting that gun violence is normal?

But I can mourn that he permanently lost any opportunity to better himself. His comments about gun violence have been posted to death, as have GOP talking points regarding gun control. It's exhausting. Christian kids were murdered in a church. Today, kids in Denver were murdered in school.

He no longer has the opportunity to do teshuva. I cannot mourn the man. He would not have cared if my religious rights or the rights of my family members were stripped away. In fact, he would have encouraged it, as several of my family members are members of the LGBTQ+ community.

He fomented political violence and ended a victim of it. While I find it hard to feel sympathy for a man who spread hate, his children are now fatherless and his wife is a widow. That is nothing to celebrate. So I mourn who he could have been. He no longer has the opportunity for introspection.

I've thought a lot about freedom of speech. Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence. And the paradox of tolerance still applies. I don't think Charlie's views have any place in civilized society, nor should he have ever had a platform to spread his beliefs.

I've seen it said that if you don't want people celebrating your death, don't live in a manner which will lead to people celebrating your death. While I agree with that in principle, if I can justify withholding empathy from people I dislike, I can justify it for anyone. I can't cross that line.

While he was alive, he gleefully attacked, mocked, and belittled people. He fomented fascism and misogyny. And I can’t help but feel sad that he wasted his one and only life being hateful until his violent end, when at any moment he could have turned around.

We can never know who Charlie could have been tomorrow. I think it’s always possible for people to right their wrongs and change for the better. That doesn’t mean the people he’s hurt are obliged to forgive him if he asks. Or even help him on his potential journey of self-reflection.

I have incredibly mixed feelings. What happened in Utah today was awful. I don't condone retribution, nor murder, nor the “eye for an eye” mentality. It’s tribalistic and feeds into the most animal impulses we have as humans. Perhaps if he had lived, he could have begun to seek repentance and repair

The idea that a government agency can knowingly and willing just lie to you as a strategy is unconscionable. Yes, this is a post about ICE. If lying is a fundamental strategy, then it cannot be justice. It is tainted from the outset.

Reminders: "Concentration camps" aren't the same as "extermination camps." Both were/are horrific. Most Nazi camps were *outside Germany*, away from the eyes of German citizens. Those trains? Were to, uh, deport the category of people whose lives were deemed unimportant. Never again is now.

I don't know about the Orthodox movement, but Conservative/Masorti Judaism has ruled that all wine is kosher (the teshuva is quite long, but that's the conclusion). One should ideally use mevushal wine for kiddush. So if it's a halakhic concern, any Canadian wine should be fine.

History will see these photos as indelible proof of an assault on both human rights and human decency. For Jews, how we responded will reveal whether and how we stayed true to our Jewish values. And how Jewish orgs responded will indicate whether they had any legitimate claims on our allegiance.

Let’s be clear: when powerful men call empathy a weakness, what they’re really saying is, “Stop caring about people we want to hurt.” Empathy is not the enemy. It’s a threat to systems built on cruelty. It disrupts power. It softens hearts. It humanizes the “other.”
