It's legitimately crazy to me that there are no native, user-friendly applications for viewing and modifying Markdown documents on Linux. I just want to manage some notes, without all the "second brain" or "PKM" stuff attached.

This could just be me speaking, but I honestly think that as a user of (modern) software, especially for software development, you have to choose blindness to keep your sanity. I don't ever expect my software to fully work and working around many classes of bugs is just an automatic thing for me.

Great post. Some classes (file picking, settings/preference saving etc.) get more blindness than others and their mention could help developers avoid these bugs. Not unlike "Falsehoods about ...".

erys is an extremely talented software developer btw. Cut its teeth on Quake Engines, learned C++ on the job, worked on the Sin 1 remaster, cares a great deal about code restoration without breaking changes AND on top of all of that is extremely competent with CMake! (and I don't say that lightly!!)

I've been noticing this too. Maybe it's the lack of trust combined with the usual editorialization. You mention the Meta Face ID thing below, and whatever Meta might say, it's difficult to trust their statements as truth since they've lied plenty before. But that's no excuse to mislead in a title

for a junk drawer to legally qualify as a real junk drawer, what is the ONE absolute mandatory item it must include? a bunch of twist ties

It’s very clear by now that if LLMs are not improving your software quality it’s either a revealed preference (yours or your org’s) for more volume vs more quality, or a skill issue. The level of testing and review they are enabling in the Go cryptography standard library is amazing.

Disappointing. Their pricing was killer- it costed me only 67 cents to use 50 million tokens Really hope they keep allowing payment by custom dollar amounts instead of forcing subscriptions

Yeah while I personally don't mind a gradient or smooth colors, I rarely see it enhance visibility. But I don't think those elements are the issue, I think its the mindset that prioritizes UI instead of UX.

Not saying it's impossible for good-looking software to be usable, just take a look at KDE Plasma, the best desktop environment on planet earth by an order of magnitude.

Software that "looks worse" is so much easier to use because the high contrast and harsh colors make it so much easier to identify where buttons, panels, and sections both start and end. Interfaces are meant to be used, not looked at.
Photograph of a "Recover files" dialog with old-style UI. Think light-grey buttons with black borders and harsh, dark, shadows.

The explosion of "unique" TLDs is so crazy to me. Is there a reasonable justification for this? I think that so many of these should get "unassigned", like ".md" and ".google".

I see, I didn't know Zig's comptime is close to dependent types, and the way it does I/O is close to an effects system, but not actually there. Thank you for sharing, the way you describe it, it sounds like a travesty to me

I can understand implementing similar lang features or design patterns when actually writing in the lang, but I think your point is that what's the point if its just so similar and "new lang features" do not cause a paradigm shift in where/how things can be computed, its just for a specific area?

How is a person supposed to read all of stty's settings on Ubuntu 26? `man stty` shows uutils's man page, which is almost empty unlike GNU coreutils'. Certainly not my first issue with this... I think the rollout of uutils is reckless and premature...

@npmjs.bsky.social Am I missing something here? I've used Stratum Authenticator (Android) successfully with PyPi and countless other websites for 2FA.

Edwin Kofler @hyperupcall.bsky.social · 28/04/2026
Does NPM no longer allow for using an authenticator app as a 2FA method??? I just cancelled my existing one to replace it immediately (old phone broke), but now I'm not sure what to do... If there is a short cooldown period, I should know about it.
Screenshot of npmjs.com website showing "security key" as the only 2FA method.

Am I imagining things or was GitKraken from 10 years ago so much higher quality? I don't remember it being an electron app and having many of those bugs associated with being an electron app. The UI and UX also have a lot of paper cuts.
