Traveling keeps reminding me of how much work it is to: a) deal with impromptu to-do items (usually via email) b) keep everything charged Somehow we’re serfs to email and chargers, and nobody is setting shit on fire.

In a mad dash before my first proper vacation this year, here's pgbg 26.2 with the non-Postgres parts ripped out and imported from bgt. Architecturally, I'm very happy with both and hope y'all try to play around with it! github.com/hynek/pgbg/r...

Due to popular demand (it's me—I'm the demand), I've decided to cut pgbg in two and liberate the database-agnostic parts. So if you want a self-healing way to run a background thread in Python with flexible wakeups, check it out! bgt.hynek.me/stable/

pgbg is a way to run fault-tolerant background threads with PostgreSQL-based¹ orchestration: lease-based leader election & NOTIFY dispatch. Hope you like it – it fell out of TWO other projects I want to open-source eventually. ¹ requires Psycopg, SQLAlchemy optional 2/2

When I was advocating for nogil/free-threading, I always said that it’s important not to judge threads by the APIs we have, but by the APIs we will build once they’re worth the trouble. Here’s my first contribution: github.com/hynek/pgbg 1/2

Only one year in, I have finally found the final shape for the example project of my uv x Docker video. Of course, it means another script rewrite, so there couldn't be a more appropriate thing to do than going to see The Odyssey.

til `set -e` is “exit immediately” and `set -x` is “print commands before executing” For years I thought it’s vice versa and since I use them usually together there was never a reason to find out 😳

Happy/nervous to announce argon2-cffi-bindings, the low-level C binding wheels used by argon2-cffi. It's a big release w/ wheels for new platforms, but the biggest item is the liberation from setuptools w/ great help by Nathan Goldbaum & @henryiii.bsky.social! 🥳 #Python github.com/hynek/argon2...

To me, the biggest fall from grace re software quality is clearly Fantastical. I don't even want to put it on vibe coding because there were times of flakiness before, but oh boy is it barely usable nowadays. Guess it's time to get used to BusyCal.

between weird LinkedIn influencers urging to delete tests that never failed and Richard’s learnings I know on what team I want to be and whose software I want to use
a slide from Richard Hipp’s “Reliability Lessons From SQLite” talk enumerating:

What Richard Has Learned

• Testability must be a design objective
• 100% MC/DC testing works
• sizeof(tests_cases) >= 10*sizeof(code)
• Approx 10-20% of code used only for testing
• Clear, concise documentation
• Expect to spend most of your time testing
• Good version control - situational awareness

So excuse me if I call bullshit TODAY when one tries to make arguments based on measuring something that we agreed is immeasurable. The impact of LLMs is the most non-ergodic event of my lifetime and I find it wild when people think they can make general statements either way.

Month ago I would’ve said Ty but looks like Meta is putting more resources into Pyrefly. Also heard that Google might be embracing PF. Currently, the Ty LSP is better tho b/c it allows you to globally jump to methods while PF does only classes & funcs. But that might change. I’m obviously biased.
