speaking as an artist with a busted first attempt at a comic, its bad..... why is it so bad????? why is the lettering still so fucked up??????????

i should clarify, when i write people doing bad things, it's because i am bad. they are me. more importantly, when you read about those bad things, they also become you. that's how story works. in fact, you are going to think about murder before this skeet ends. how's that feel, sicko.

youre 100% right, it definitely does extend to webcomics. theres like. an elitism or derision- its not taken seriously- even the very best digital art and comics has a caveat, when Comics (broadly) talks about them. theyre like "this is good (for a webcomic)"

010

Hydein @hydein.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

especially the way comix was like. embarrassed and super judgmental about manga influence? that kind of a person is long gone, but theres still the ghost of that impression

110

Hydein @hydein.bsky.social · 23/09/2026

i also think about comics like this, i anthropomorphize in the same way. its sort of like the vestiges of Comix, from the 60s and 70s. it hasnt really been a dominant role in decades, but the nostalgia and like... pretension? has remained for a long time

i don’t know if this is a canadian midwest thing though, they seemed genuinely ubiquitous for a time. most people knew the song, and a good chunk of them knew the artists too

Hydein @hydein.bsky.social · 15/09/2026

i think i’m a few years older than you and it’s hard to overstate how significantly their anal sex for jesus song dominated my classmates psyche. it was an inescapable pop culture reference

its why he's clean-shaven in canon. if he had a beard in the comic he would be too hot and everyone would be too distracted to focus on the story 😔

Lolita, a film by erotic thriller director Adrian Lyne, premiered in September 1997, if you were in Europe. Episode 30 of Revolutionary Girl Utena came out in October 1997. It's unlikely one of these inspired the other. No. It's worse. This is the strength of a shared language of boundary violation.
