Slowly putting some things I’ve been working on to paper. Here’s my first post, “Triangle of Forgetting,” an impossibility result for secure group messaging: Monotone convergence, temporal secrecy, and dynamic membership cannot be guaranteed at once. weboftru.st/post/triangl...

Triangle of Forgetting
No protocol can guarantee monotone merge, temporal secrecy, and dynamic membership at once. The triangle of forgetting appears when a distributed system cannot tell whether a late update has expired o...

I just got coffee with a young person who reached out and wanted to hear about my experience working on the decentralized web. And even though I’m not doing anything atproto-related, it was nice to point him in this direction as the *kind* of thing to look into.

A little esoteric, but I implemented a faithful port of Paco from Coq → Lean, which I needed for another project. Paco lets you write composable proofs about infinite processes. Original: plv.mpi-sws.org/paco/ Lean: github.com/hxrts/paco-l...

I’ve been working on my own solution for a few months now. It is indeed very complex. Interesting though! Will be publishing a couple write-ups soon.

can someone point me to that article about splitting out app-specific data so that mere mortals can run a PDS? I think it was from the @tangled.org folks? I'm working on a project that could integrate into atproto if this architectural change lands.

I’m very confused by this internet handle discussion. If the protocol design has been consistent about one thing, it’s that atproto is *not* an authentication system. You’re signing-in with a DID that uses DNS as a certificate authority.

Feels kinda off that the Bluesky app shows you how many people bookmarked something. And exactly who bookmarked the post is technically public, but you can’t see it. Yet the list of who liked your post is visible?

I made a little choreographic programming DSL in rust that let's you write session typed protocols in a concise, safe way: hxrts.com/rumpsteak-au... Using it for a personal project and it works quite well.

this is interesting. my experience with ecosystem funds is they tend to suffer an adverse selection problem (quality projects typically want financing from bluechip tech funds which don’t want an ecosystem limitation) BUT this could extend the overton window for atproto becoming broadly investable.

suggestion for decentralized moderation of legitimate accounts: - add the ability to tag an account as fraudulent on profile pages - if a sufficient number of the people you follow have tagged that account as fraudulent, hide them from your feed lots of ways to improve this, but good first pass

is there a feed that’s just the bluesky staff? when there’s a product update I often want to quickly skim the dev team’s comments rather than bluesky marketing channels

Building software for a multi-chain world is complex. It involves navigating diverse VMs, consensus mechanisms, fee models, bridges, signature schemes, and token standards. At the Columbia Cryptoecon Workshop @hxrts.bsky.social shared how TimewaveLabs is tackling it with a fresh software paradigm.🔑🕰️🌊

starting to realize there’s a correspondence between Arrow’s theorem and FLP impossibility. both identify trade-offs between consistent rules applied within a system vs progress toward a resolution.

private p2p networking is a fascinating problem space that’s barely been touched. only a handful of papers, but they combine ideas from mixnets and decentralized peer discovery.

why do crypto haters feel the need to spout their distain? like, even if it were all a scam why make your whole personality about this? it obviously comes off as ignorant to anyone working in the industry, but also quite petty.

Ok, a rundown of how we get p2p ATProtocol going: 1. Run *standard* ATProto services, locally 2. Use p2p to holepunch TCP connections 3. Add a thin layer for peering management Bundle all that up in an app, and we have a recipe for adding resilience & scaling to Bluesky. 🧵 teim:

dumb question: for starter packs if you "follow all" you're not subscribing to the whole pack as it changes over time, correct? I assume it's just a shortcut for following all listed accounts at that moment in time.

unfortunately this misunderstands the trade-off taken by protocolizing atproto. all data must be published to ensure the possibility of credible exit. you can encrypt published data, however it’s beyond the state of the art to make a reencryption system that can support large fluctuating groups.

Those calling for a TOS change to prevent scraping have completely lost the plot on what this platform is trying to achieve: protocol-enforced open access.

it’s typically more productive to game out adversarial scenarios, stating worst-case behavior the network should maintain. imo this is the one to start with: a government puts pressure on bluesky pbc to censor content, users in that jurisdiction should be able to read/write to the network somehow

bluesky has the same infuriating bug as twitter, when new posts load they push the post you’re currently reading down instead of placing loaded content above 😡

@pfrazee.com one small suggestion. I think it’s easy to get added to a starter pack and not realize it and then suddenly get a bunch of follows and not really know why or how. it could be nice to show how the follow originated.

question for folks: how do you (personally) use different feeds? when do you switch to one vs another? do you have a default? is it a mood thing? does it depend on whether you're active or passive? if multiple viewing planes is a core feature, probably productive to talk about patterns of use.
