AI isn't just media we consume, it's something we interact with in increasingly human-like ways that are more realistic than anything previously available. That's why it's good to be careful. Plenty of cognitive science affirms that attitude generalization and normalization are real phenomena.

My concern is the effect on people. bsky.app/profile/huwm...

Oh I agree: they don't actually care about human welfare and their statement was made for purely selfish reasons. But in this case they just happen, accidentally, to be right. (I give them no credit for that.)

Yep. And if someone gets their kicks from torturing a very realistic screaming, crying woman then that's bad and concerning. That's the point.

Huwmanbeing @huwmanbeing.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Totally disagree. There's no harmless way to use a realistic torture-r*pe simulator.

Huwmanbeing @huwmanbeing.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
For example: if a person spends their time pretending to torture and abuse a highly lifelike model of a woman capable of realistically screaming and crying, we'd probably find that concerning. Not because it harms the model, but because getting comfortable with that behavior poses a risk to people.

Video game characters and AI are both inanimate, but our interactions with AI tend to be much more human-like... which is why we need to be more careful.

AI isn't a person and it has no feelings. However... getting used to acting cruelly toward something that can respond in human-like ways is pretty dangerous for people.

I don't think code has any feelings at all. However, getting used to acting cruelly toward something that can respond in human-like ways feels pretty dangerous for humans.

Yes, I think this may be a case of Anthropic doing the right thing but for the wrong reasons. My concern is that a lot of people seemingly don't feel that it IS the right thing, and assert there's nothing wrong with the behavior since it's directed at something inanimate. I disagree with that.

I don't see them saying models have feelings, just that they don't want people acting cruelly toward them. To me that makes sense... not because inanimate objects have feelings (they don't) but because it's dangerous to normalize acting cruelly toward anything that can respond in human-like ways.

Again: the problem is not that the inanimate thing can experience cruelty (it can't). The problem is humans getting used to acting cruelly.
110
Huwmanbeing @huwmanbeing.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Code has no feelings, but that's not the point. Getting used to acting cruelly toward something (particularly something you can converse with) is likely to be bad for people.
000
Huwmanbeing @huwmanbeing.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
That it's not a person is irrelevant. Getting used to being deliberately cruel to something (particularly something you can converse with) is likely to be bad for people.
110
Huwmanbeing @huwmanbeing.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I think the idea is that wrongness comes not just from consequences but from intent. Deliberately intending to be cruel is wrong regardless of what the recipient actually does or can experience.

It's in the character of God to sometimes commit genocide, so that doesn't seem like a sound basis for morality.

i love philosophers man. this is extremely my shit
It sounds plausible. But now let me ask you to imagine this. You wake up in the morning and find yourself back to back in bed with an unconscious violinist. A famous unconscious violinist. He has been found to have a fatal kidney ailment, and the Society of Music Lovers has canvassed all the available medical records and found that you alone have the right blood type to help. They have therefore kidnapped you, and last night the violinist's circulatory system was plugged into yours, so that your kidneys can be used to extract poisons from his blood as well as your own. The director of the hospital now tells you, "Look, we're sorry the Society of Music Lovers did this to you--we would never have permitted it if we had known. But still, they did it, and the violinist is now plugged into you. To unplug you would be to kill him. But never mind, it's only for nine months. By then he will have recovered from his ailment, and can safely be unplugged from you." Is it morally incumbent on you to accede to this situation? No doubt it would be very nice of you if you did, a great kindness. But do you have to accede to it? What if it were not nine months, but nine years? Or longer still? What if the director of the hospital says. "Tough luck. I agree. but now you've got to stay in bed, with the violinist plugged into you, for the rest of your life. Because remember this. All persons have a right to life, and violinists are persons. Granted you have a right to decide what happens in and to your body, but a person's right to life outweighs your right to decide what happens in and to your body. So you cannot ever be unplugged from him." I imagine you would regard this as outrageous, which suggests that something really is wrong with that plausible-sounding argument I mentioned a moment ago.

Part of the strength of JJT's argument is that it bypasses all the questions around personhood, developmental stages, etc. Even if the being in a woman's uterus was mature enough to drink, vote, and pay taxes, it would still have no right to use the woman's body against her will.

Committing war crimes is unlikely to make Israel safer in the long term. Israel depends on military aid from other nations, and the more atrocities it commits the less likely those nations will be to support them in the future. The decline's already pretty sharp. news.gallup.com/poll/702440/...

I definitely believe Palestinians deserve freedom from Hamas, from Iranian-backed terror, and from leaders who use civilians as shields. I also believe they deserve freedom from Israeli oppression and brutality. I agree that compassion cannot be selective.

If you're honestly saying you disagree, and that you think taking more lives is the lesser crime, then you're affirming that either you don't value life or don't value lives equally. Either way, it affirms that we have no moral common ground, and I should bow out before you make me vomit. 👋

Think of it like this: If A kills one child (the most they could) and B kills 50 children (but COULD have killed 100), B has still killed 50 times more than A. Those lost lives matter, and B's crime is vastly greater. No one would give him credit just because he could've killed even more.

Huwmanbeing @huwmanbeing.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Israel has killed vastly more civilians than Hamas has, and they're continuing to do it. If you genuinely feel that civilian deaths matter, then you will agree that the actions of Israel are many times worse than the actions of Hamas.

How would we judge someone in the 1940s who said the same? "I'm not complicit in the Holocaust, I just choose not to speak up or say anything against it, but hey, that doesn't mean I don't care!" Sorry, but if you quietly go along with it then you ARE complicit, and it DOES mean you don't care.

"At best you're making Israel no worse than Hamas" Hamas killed 1.2k on 10/7. Israeli forces have since killed 70k (including 20k children), injured 170k (including 40k children), and displaced 90% of the entire pop of Gaza. Both are abhorrent, but the latter is quantifiably worse.

"Atheists believe there is no God (or gods), no soul, no transcendence at all." Nope. Atheism is just the lack of belief in gods, nothing more. You can totally be atheist and believe in transcendence.
