Exceptional feature on an artist who still has much to give. Fudge is an extraordinary album, perhaps his best so far.

Mrs Hutchie always feared that if I ever listened to it I might become a Floyd fan. About a decade ago I gave it a try. Nothing, absolutely zilch. Then I tried The Wall. Unbearable from soup to nuts. I will never be a Floyd fan.

The great innovation brought to rock’n’roll by Buddy Holly was that no two songs should sound alike, a rule later wisely followed by The Beatles. The same could not be said about his record label’s art director. Happy 90th birthday to one of the great originators.

Having spent an afternoon chatting with them after their Jazz Cafe show, I’m all in. Behind the scenes, Daptone have never been quite this excited about a release

They were folkies rather jazzers, but definitely not beatniks, sadly

I wish we did look equally cool - me on my first Vespa in 85 versus my mum and aunt on my parents’ Perilla in 1958. No question who looks cooler. The parents regularly took the scoot to Stonehaven from the Sou’side and once went to Torquay on it. Just once, mind

I doubt it was 1964, though. They moved to Britain in 1965. Nor Brussels, I don't think they played there. Amsterdam in June 1966, possibly, which was their first European tour.

I'm not allowing BVSC - my self-imposed rule is that his name needs to feature prominently on the sleeve - but Timbuktu and River are contenders. But why Paris, Texas over any of the his others, especially when it comes to soundtracks? What makes it the one?

Hancock did - it’s a step down from a top hat, not as formal, so it was a joke, a nod to his belief in his exalted position in the class system. Don’t think Hall’s hats would have been as stiff-brimmed, the 70s were a floppier decade

Sub-editor who wears hat knowledge: Fedora comes from the name of a French play starting Sarah Bernhardt. Whether or not both still require caps is the sort of afterhours pub debate I miss

What does it look like from the front?
000
David Hutcheon @hutchie.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
Two sides dents that pinch the crown at the front (same as a fedora but with a narrower brim). The classic men’s hate shape. So definitely not that

David Hutcheon @hutchie.bsky.social · 18/05/2026
Homburg needs a stiff brim and a gutter dent running the full length of the crown - see Prince’s hat at the George Harrison concert
