A small number of US pilots defied neutrality laws to fight Nazi Germany during the Battle of Britain. Olympian Billy Fiske was one of these heroes. On 16 Aug 1940, Fiske's Hurricane was hit. He died the next day. He was the first American pilot to be killed in the war.

The 1932 Gloster TC.33 was a large four-engined biplane designed to meet Air Ministry specification C.16/28, to carry 30 troops and their equipment 1,200 miles. Only one was built. Despite generally lovely handling, was let down by very sluggish performance at max weight

The Cleveland was the RAF name for five French Curtiss SBC-4 Helldivers stranded in Canada. Delivered aboard HMS Furious, they served at Burtonwood, Little Rissington & No. 24 Sqn at Hendon. Barely flown operationally, they became ground trainers. An often-forgotten RAF type

Comparing the Fairey Fulmar to the Grumman F-14 Tomcat is sacrilegious, but I don’t care. One was a stolid British 260-mph, piston-engined monoplane with a reputation for mediocrity; the other, a Cold War sex-and-death god jet eternally glowing in the California sun, attended to by greased, muscular beachball players and beautiful civilian advisors. The 1942 Admiralty instructional film ‘Ditching Without ‘Hedging’ is certainly no Top Gun (and Ship with Wings is no Ditching without Hedging). ‘Winkle’ Brown lacked the swagger of Maverick. Yet, when stripped of their technological eras, their doctrinal DNA is identical, and they had eerily similar histories. ‘Madness!’ you shout at me as you prepare for a navy-style barroom brawl,
