Today we met for Austin Bailey's Teaching Scholarship Circle centered on Susan D. Blum's book on Schoolishness. We talked abt where we notice schoolishness & alienation in education. Looking forward to reading more next week & to our guest of honor, @susandblum.bsky.social who joins our 3rd session!
where do you notice schoolishness?

“the structure of a semester is bizarre”

“the idea of preparedness alienates”

“this is just for the test; students aren’t taught how to connect learning to tomorrow”“the race to the finish line (to fit in as much as possible)”

“Having a text book is the most schoolish thing i can think of”“i struggled a lot in college, so when i started teaching, I identified with my students a lot. it feels alienating for education to be so disembodied.”

“issues about grades get so technical that the human relationship in learning gets lost.”“expecting them all to leave with the same set of skills is strange when they come to college with such different skills.”

“Students are so overloaded they have less capacity for play and just want to get the points, nothing exploratory or for fun”

"I teach 8:30AM classes, so sometimes my classroom door isn’t open yet. Put the number for IT and AV in your phone. "There is a Children’s Learning Center. It is on the 68th St campus in Hunter North. And it offers high-quality childcare for the Hunter College community. This is a resource that’s not just for us as faculty and staff, but also for students." - Uchenna Itam (Art and Art History) advice for new Hunter instructors"The Hunter College Children’s Learning Center is a resource for your students. So if you notice that maybe one of your students needs support in this area, this is an amazing resource." - Uchenna Itam (Art and Art History) advice for new Hunter instructors

Our ACERT Steering Committee met last week to do some strategic planning with oversized post-its, lunchtime seminar brainstorming with Padlet, and more. We celebrated our incoming Faculty Fellows (more on that soon!), our incoming Faculty Director Gina Riley and outgoing director Julie Van Peteghem.

Last week during "What I Wish I Had Known Before I Started Teaching at Hunter," Xuemeng Li shared some advice for new colleagues teaching large lectures.
There are several big classrooms that can hold more than 100 students at Hunter. Some are like a theater, I would say. When I talked to my chair, I learned that there are other large classrooms that are a little different in setting. - Xuemeng Li (Sociology)Instead of an auditorium style, some large classroom spaces have movable tables, so I started booking those classrooms for the future semesters, and that worked really well. - Xuemeng Li (Sociology) advice for new Hunter instructors

Last week we hosted a lunchtime seminar in which our faculty spoke on "What I Wish I Had Known Before I Started Teaching at Hunter," sharing advice for new colleagues.
Join online and in-person weekly writing groups. These have been really great for me to calendar out my writing time and balance my teaching, service, and research responsibilities. - Uchenna Itam (Art and Art History) advice for new Hunter instructorsSame with the online writing retreats. Being able to have 3, 5, 7, even 12 weeks of community, writing together online, checking in--that has been really supportive. - Uchenna Itam (Art and Art History) advice for new Hunter instructors
