I got a halfway decent picture of my patio panther for once. This is Buddy, age 6+. Touching is not allowed, but he plays far more energetically than my lazy indoor cats.
Black cat with yellow eyes lying on his side on a patio with a mouse toy in his paw.

A trailer for one dog, a bakfiets for the other! idk how practical it would be, but it would be very cute.

The first picture doesn't do justice to the colors of these sea shells. They are all shades of rich tyrian purple.
A few dozen bivalve shells arranged in a rectangle. They are all different and in colors from white to tyrian purple Over 100 sea urchin shells in various sizes and colors arranged tightly in a rectangle with led lights behind them making them glow

I googled "flat-bottomed sharks" to try and remember what this group of sharks was called, unsuccessfully.
Dozens of different small, flat-bottomed sharks arranged as if they were swimming together Nice shadowboxes with colorful lizards in lifelike poses

I found the headless birds in the collection kind of creepy, but the colors of the feathers are undeniably stunning.
A parrot with wing and tail feathers spread but no head. The feathers are vibrant red, green, and blue

It didn't photograph that well, but the way these look like they were dusted with blue glitter was so lovely.
Dragonflies arranged in a diamond shape. The wings are deep maroon and black with blue sparkles.

It was fascinating looking at all the variation in these crabs.

Went to the local museum yesterday and they had this incredible exhibit called Exquisite Creatures by Christopher Marley. Here are some of my favorite pieces.

Getting ready for bed in the basement with a dog, two cats, and a goat.
Stuffed goat with long gray hair, standing about 2 feet tall. Not taxidermied

Yeah, my brother's dog is curled up sadly in the basement. One of the cats meanwhile is watching fireworks out the window.

It was nice hanging out watching them in a pool until it got cold, but damn, I can see why people who have a problem with fireworks really have a problem with fireworks.

I'm in Chicago, and the number and quality of fireworks in the neighborhood could have supplied multiple professional shows. A thick haze hangs in the sky. I assume we have hours left to go.

Here's some more fungus I saw walking back from the bus stop.

Someone already fucked with this fairy ring, and some poor dude was just about to mow it. There was a big dead owl face down in the grass 10-15 yards down the street, too.
A semicircle of very large mushrooms in bright green grass next to a sidewalk. Some of the mushrooms have been knocked around.

How many caterpillars can one milkweed plant support? I've heard a lot of stories about people desperately trying to buy more later in the season when their caterpillars have eaten everything. Maybe you can encourage people to buy multiples.

"When it is ripe, the squirting cucumber will detach from the stem and shoot out its seeds in a high-pressure jet of mucus. In only 30 milliseconds, it can send its seeds about 65-feet-per second. How it achieves this feat has stumped scientists for centuries." www.popsci.com/science/cucu...

Dora @humdrumspider.bsky.social · 01/05/2026
This is a common misconception. It's only squirting cucumbers, Ecballium elaterium, that benefit from naked young men, not the pickling staple Cucumis sativus.

The thing is that my glasses are for mild myopia and I can't read with them on. I don't do a lot of outdoor reading, but when I do I guess I usually sit in the shade.

I stopped wearing sunglasses when I got glasses. I did dig out an old pair, but the lenses were trashed.

It's 70 out so I thought I would sit outside and read, but the light reflecting off the page was unbearable. It probably doesn't help that I've been living like a mole person for the better part of a year.

In 2016, Jane Goodall spoke at the International Primatological Society meetings. She closed her talk asking everyone to thank the primates we studied not with applause, but with their calls. And so a room full of Very Eminent Primatologists made delighted monkey noises to Jane Goodall. ⚱️🐒🧪🌍

I had everyone's foxy childhood crush on mine.
Vintage metal lunchbox featuring Disney's Robin Hood. Prince John is sitting on a throne with his hands full of gold coins while Sir Hiss looks on and a rhino guard keeps watch. Robin Hood, Friar Tuck, and Skippy the rabbit boy are behind the throne stealing moneybags.

Saw this unfamiliar but dapper-looking beetle when harvesting catnip to dry. inaturalist pegged it as a burning blister beetle, which doesn't sound like a bug to mess with. I looked it up and they do blister your skin and you absolutely do not want to eat them. Horses have died from eating too many.

I went out with a flashlight to pick raspberries for my cheesecake and immediately got dive-bombed by moths. Worth it, but I don't think I'm going to make a habit of midnight gardening.

A baby raccoon just honked threateningly at me. Really didn't expect him to make that sound or be that determined to get at the cat food.

I just came across this article the other day. It's for Chicago, so idk if any of these species will be native for you, but it's got good info on pots and soil, and maybe you can find something similar for your new area. wildones.org/native-plant...

If it helps, a lot of native plants, ones that don't have a taproot, will do just fine being moved, even over and over again. It's work, but it takes experience growing a plant to maturity to figure out where it's going to look and grow well.

Consider renting a sod cutter. A manual one is cheap but incredibly hard work. Gas-powered one is more expensive, but it's easier than digging up grass with a shovel and much faster than killing your grass by smothering it.

#flowerreport is a thing, but you should start #pollinatorreport and get people talking about what's buzzing. For me it's the borage^ and very last blooms of the baptisia*.
