Got overwhelmed animating the shot and went back to working on tools not because I couldn't finish it, but because I was overwhelmed by the many different ways I *could* finish it. Maybe I could just do it today.

Figured out that things kept breaking because the naive solutions I came up with on my own actually worked *BETTER* than the "correct" methods I learned later!

YouTube videos really are best. Node trees get so complex, it would be hard to visualize how they go together otherwise. Lots of good videos, but I especially recommend harryblends m.youtube.com/@harryblends

Painful to look at a feature I put so much time and effort into and go "huh...was this actually even necessary"

On the other hand, if you do a lot of caching, it becomes pretty practical for render animation purposes!

I used to be so excited for a future like this. See, in my naivete, I thought we would give robots credit for their own art...not force the robots to draw for us so we don't have to pay other humans for their work. Worst of all worlds.

You posted to a public site about GN and I browsed through the tag, so I shared things that work for me. You're a stranger, so I don't know your history or your preferences, I just know that the Blender community is about working together.

Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Unintuitive at first, but GN works best when you think of it in terms of multiple 3D shapes interacting simultaneously, instead of one object doing one thing at a time.

Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Not too familiar with this problem, but in GN, you can often avoid looping. Better practice is to move points to a position based on a shared property, update them based on their proximity there, then move back to original pos with appropriate offset. "Cluster By Distance" makes this even easier.

Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Oh yeah--for better texture alignment, you can also go from textures! Sorry, forgot to mention that.
020
Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
You could go from mesh edges instead of spline, or convert the spline type to Poly for the same effect. That way, the movement is predictable. With the latest version, GN can also draw from bones directly.

Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Depends on whether it's drawing from the source geometry using Relative or Original. If Relative, it'll only move when the source geometry moves. (If GN is on the geometry itself, it's a non-issue.)

www.youtube.com/watch?v=LtQ7... This is now the first music I've ever made in my life. My spouse helped me set up and learn LMMS months ago, and I practiced by trying to recreate the "Nightmare" theme from Robot Carnival, with a slight spin.

I was invited in on a bioblitzing trip, and was very excited to help discover what might be a new kind of spider. And then, just like that, one of the entomologists took the spider I had found and put it in a vial of preservative. I felt sick.

The problem is that insects are very fragile, and if they're adults, they typically aren't going to live much longer. So, it ends up just...being easier to kill them in advance, I guess. Still makes me very upset, though.
110
Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I don't think they would if you gave them enough substrate to burrow. They're ambush hunters, they don't go looking for each other.

Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Absolutely, I just wonder why they lost the ability to reproduce with age, because that itself is unusual. I guess it would crowd out resources, which would be bad for the shrimp and their young. Like, evolution isn't a well-oiled machine, but when something stands out it's fun to figure out why.

At least with these, I don't mind if it's an animal that lived its natural life to its fullest. Killing animals for research, though...that is why I was never able to go into entomology.

It's probably largely just that laying the eggs takes so much out of them, they don't really have the energy to keep doing things. Since they don't need to, there's no pressure selecting against it.

That's really interesting because most animals can reproduce until they die. Menopause is a big thing, because it means females prioritize raising their grandchildren over their children, and happens in social animals. I wonder if the presence of the older fairy shrimp helps the younger ones somehow

That's why to this day, I prefer the The Fly II to The Fly (1986). Unpopular opinion, but I love that the protagonist acts more like a fly, very chill in general. I also feel like the monster design evokes the overall feeling of a fly more, ignoring details.

Because that's about quality of life for the poor. But AI? That's a *military* advantage, and that's all the rich care about. (Solar energy sure ties in, but rich people don't seem to be very smart these days.)

I think what they mean is, investors keep demanding AI be crammed into everything, and the sciences don't have a ton of pocket money, so eventually some proprietary resources with no alternatives are going to be using AI and there is no way around that.

Just attach the base of the arm to one part of your torso (or a girdle), then glue a string (like a sinew) to a muscle in another place. Flex that muscle, the arm flexes! You could also then exaggerate the movement with a cheaper motion sensor or switch set off by the string to activate a motor.
030
Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
Dead fish are shaped to swim upstream if held on a string, for example; mayfly naiad molts will swim with appropriate articulation; and mantis nymph molts will automatically latch onto surfaces and land on their feet when falling!

Humans-B-Gone! @humansbgone.bsky.social · 30/08/2026
If you decide you want something easier/low cost, you could also set up loosely articulated puppet arms, and those would also respond to you flexing those muscles! Real animals often have parts optimized to move with very little actual energy, especially insects.
