Separation of church and state helps ensure that public schools, courts, hospitals, and other public institutions serve people of every faith and no faith. It prevents religious beliefs from determining people’s rights, choices, or access to public services.

Women have shaped every part of our shared story, often while facing barriers that kept their work and leadership from receiving the recognition they deserved. This Women’s History Month, we honour the women who changed the world and continue the work of building a more equal future.

Human dignity demands that we defend people’s right to live freely and stand as equals. That means confronting discrimination wherever it restricts someone’s freedom or shuts them out of society. Everyone deserves dignity, so we must defend it.

The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation confronts the history of residential schools, where Indigenous children were taken from their families to erase their cultures and identities. Reconciliation means facing that history and supporting Indigenous-led efforts to repair ongoing harm.

Access to contraception gives people greater control over their bodies and their futures. Reproductive freedom means being able to decide whether and when to become pregnant. Contraception is part of that freedom, and access to it should never depend on income, geography, or others’ beliefs.

Canada’s secular foundation helps protect everyone’s freedom of belief, including the freedom not to believe. Religious freedom works best when government does not favour one faith over another, or religion over nonreligion.

People often ask where nonreligious people get their morality, as though religion were the only possible foundation for right and wrong. We look at how moral thinking can develop outside religion through reflection on how our choices affect other people.

We will never all think alike, live alike, or move through the world in the same way. Precisely because those differences are part of being human, they can never be a reason to deny someone dignity or belonging.

Building a more humane world means taking seriously the conditions people actually live under and asking whether our institutions and public choices make those lives safer, freer and more dignified. When they fall short, we have a responsibility to question them and work toward something better.

Change can be unsettling, but so can refusing to change. Bertrand Russell understood that human flourishing depends on our capacity to respond to the world as it is becoming rather than simply preserving the world as it was. #Humanism #QuoteOfTheDay

Secularism supports human rights, advances scientific progress, protects religious freedom, and upholds the separation of church and state. As a nonprofit humanist organization, we envision a secular Canadian society guided by reason, science, and compassion.

What kind of society do we want to build? It's a question worth asking again and again. Especially at a time when democracies are under pressure, public trust is declining, and disagreement can too easily turn into division.
