Butsuryū-ji Temple (仏隆寺) is a lovely spot in late September, where a long stone staircase glows with bright red spider lilies (ひがんばな). #redspiderlily #higanbana #ひがんばな #autumn2025 #nara #narajapan #manjushage #lycorisradiata #discoverjapan #仏隆寺 #佛隆寺
Around the autumn equinox (Higan), the blooms—full of Buddhist meaning and local history—make the steps feel like a path to the Pure Land. After wildlife once threatened them, kind volunteers and the community worked together to bring the lilies back, so everyone can enjoy this beautiful seasonal show every year.

Watching the Harvest Moon rise over the lovely Togetsukyō Bridge in Arashiyama. #togetsukyobridge #arashiyama #kyoto #kyotojapan #kyototrip #fullmoon #harvestmoon #渡月橋
The nearly full moon (98.8% waxing gibbous) peeked over the mountains, and a few of us waited with anticipation. When it finally appeared, happy cheers rang out—it gave me goosebumps and always feels so magical. Hundreds of years ago, Kyoto’s nobles gathered here to admire the moon and share poetry; I can only imagine their other adventures. No surprise that the bridge is affectionately known as the “Moon Crossing Bridge.”

A few pictures from my archives. I visited Jakkō-in (寂光院) in Ōhara, Kyoto. The garden there is beautiful, with ponds and Koi fish. It was well into December, and the autumn leaves had fallen to the ground.
Jakko-in is a renowned temple that once served as the secluded residence of Kenreimon-in Tokuko (1155–1213). Tokuko was the daughter of Taira no Kiyomori (1118–1181), the powerful chief of the Heike clan, and the consort of Emperor Takakura. After the Heike clan's devastating defeat at the naval Battle of Dan-no-ura, where they were crushed by Minamoto no Yoshitsune (1159–1189)—the younger brother of the Genji clan chief—Tokuko was rescued from an attempted suicide and found refuge at Jakko-in.

Yōkoku-ji, renowned for its ancient tradition of sacred water, underwent a creative transformation in 2015. The current head priest, aimed to immerse visitors in the tranquility of the temple and allow them to experience the changing seasons through all their senses. Inspired by the concept of a gift box of flowers, the temple embarked on a unique initiative to adorn its water basins, known as chōzu, with seasonal blooms.

Hanachōzu, or “flower water basin,” was a practice that added a modern, artistic touch to the ancient ritual of purification. Today, the five hanachōzu at Yōkoku-ji are a stunning sight year-round, adorned with flowers like hydrangeas in summer and vibrant maple leaves in autumn. This creativity has earned Yōkoku-ji the title of the “Birthplace of Hanachōzu,” where a centuries-old tradition of sacred water blossomed into a beloved modern art form.

The Rock That Refuses to Fall: Kasaneiwa on Shōdoshima.
There are places that beckon to you, not with maps or guidebooks, but with an enigmatic allure that resonates deep within your soul. Kasaneiwa, the “piled rocks” of Shodoshima, is one such place.

On a warm late morning, I arrived at the trailhead, where the air was filled with the intoxicating scent of salt and cedar. Before me lay a daunting 253 stone steps, leading to an impossible sight: a colossal pile of boulders stacked like a child’s forgotten game of stones, defying gravity, time, and logic itself.

The origins of Kasaneiwa remain an enigma. Was it the result of nature’s gradual sculpting, or the deliberate creation of ancient hands with a specific purpose? The islanders, however, are aware of its existence—a precarious, miraculous presence—and that reaching it has a profound impact on them.

I started climbing.

The steps gave way to an 80-meter stretch of steep, exposed rock. A chain hung there like an enticing invitation. Step by step, I pulled myself upward, my breath synchronising with the rhythm of the climb. My legs began to tremble, but something held me moving—a pull, a promise, the quiet hum of the island urging me onward.

Twenty minutes later, I stood at the summit, breathless in every sense.

Below me, the Seto Inland Sea unfurled like a shimmering liquid silver, its horizon dotted with islands that seemed like stepping stones to an ancient realm. The balanced rocks loomed above, their proximity almost palpable, yet they held steadfast, defying the forces of nature.

Legend speaks of Kasaneiwa, a deity believed to bestow good fortune, particularly upon those who harbour hopes within their hearts. Students flock to the shrine, seeking prayers for exam success, while travellers come seeking a captivating tale to carry back home. I arrived for neither purpose, yet perhaps for both.

If you go:
🥾 253 steps + an 80-meter chain-assisted climb
🌅 Sunset is pure magic
🚗 The access road is narrow—go slow, breathe deep

Did you know? Magnolias are often depicted in traditional Japanese art, symbolising purity and nobility. A notable example is a 1931 woodblock print by Ohara Shoson, which features a vibrant pink magnolia alongside a magpie, a bird associated with happiness. Additionally, the magnolia holds significance as a celebrated herald of spring.

Iwashimizu Hachiman-gū (石清水八幡宮) in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture, is hosting its annual Oni yarai hito (鬼やらい人) or “driving out demons” festival today.

Chronological order of the “Driving out Demons” matsuri:

After the Shinto priest and staff gathered in front of the Honden (本殿), the sacred peach bow was symbolically shot towards the four lucky directions (northeast, southeast, southwest, and northwest), as well as this year’s lucky direction, south-southeast. This was followed by striking a budding peach branch in the same directions.

Then, four “demons” (Oni yarai hito - 鬼やらい人) entered the grounds, shouting and attempting to scare the children. The demons then tried to overrun the Shinto clergy, who defended themselves by throwing “Lucky beans” (Fukumame - 福豆) at them while shouting “Demons out! Luck in!” (鬼は外! 福は内! Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!).

The demons were driven out, and then the real fun began with the “Lucky beans” (Fukumame - 福豆) game, where the beans were thrown towards the eagerly awaiting crowd.

Ujikami Shrine, a profound historical landmark, is renowned for housing the oldest original Shinto shrine building in Japan, dating back to approximately 1060. Initially constructed as a guardian shrine for the nearby Byodo-in Temple, it is celebrated for its elegant “Nagare-zukuri” architectural style.

Here are some interesting facts:

Ancient Heritage: The Honden, the main hall of the shrine, is a National Treasure and stands as the oldest example of shrine architecture in the country.
Imperial Connection: The shrine houses Emperor Ojin and his sons, including the renowned scholar-prince Uji no Wakiiratsuko, whose significance is celebrated in local legends.
Natural Spring: The shrine grounds boast the “Kirihara-sui,” one of the seven renowned ancient springs of Uji and the only one still flowing today.

Hatsumōde (初詣) is a Japanese tradition where people visit Shinto shrines or Buddhist temples for their first New Year’s visit. During this time, they pray for health, happiness, and good fortune for the coming year. People often draw omikuji fortunes and buy new omamori amulets. Hatsumōde typically takes place from January 1st to the first few days of the year and is a significant spiritual renewal and fresh beginning in Japanese culture.
