George’s St or the one on the quays? I never took to the former but thought the latter was vg the one time I went.

Sounds like Roddy Ho from Slow Horses speaking (the biggest idiot in current fiction).

He did indeed find it repugnant and repeatedly said so. Weizenbaum’s book of AI and computational critique from the mid-70s still stands up.

What about the postboxes? Aren’t they red? Do they still have them?

I’m not sure really. I think it might be something that has now run its course. Still enjoyable but …

The new series of Slow Horses has been filmed in a world where the colour red has been ruthlessly expunged. Visual McCarthyism if you will.

I think it’s the plot of the next series of Slow Horses.

But unless they are extremely wealthy they must also be looking at their children and realising that they won’t be able to live here.

Highlights of my cycle today. Car exiting hospital on the wrong side of the road to avoid waiting for the barrier. Car pausing at a red light to make sure nothing was coming before speeding through. Car mounting the pavement at speed to make a green light, failing, and just ploughing through anyway.

For the day that’s in it. Perhaps not regarded as up there with his best work but the opening track, and particularly McCoy Tyner’s contribution to it, really is Out Of This World.

The €1bn spent on fossil fuel sinces April would have put 8kw battery & solar on 100,000 homes buying them energy freedom for 20+ years. The €1bn+ that will be spent over the next few months would bring that to 250,000 homes. What we lack is will and vision

Maybe I’m completely at odds with what most people want to use social media for but it baffles me why anyone would want to follow/engage with one of these main character types with 40K followers or whatever. Would you not be better off cultivating an interesting friend in real life?

Would it be safe to assume he has no actual expertise on those topics about which he is expounding at length and that his primary skill set is oriented towards arguing with people on the Internet?

I did a back of the envelope calculation yesterday and figured it would cost 10 billion to kit out the entire country with solar panels. Payback on many levels would be colossal. Well, there was no envelope. Just in my head.

Another vote for LibreOffice here. Never really have to use anything else and works with docs produced by those still using MS.

For me the first five albums on IRS are untouchable. Green and Out Of Time are patchy. Automatic is brilliant but not quite my bag. New Adventures is great once you are past the first couple of songs. After that .. nah

Really enjoyed the Shannon/Narducy REM love-in at Vicar Street tonight but it did really show up how poor their later music was in comparison to how sublime much of the earlier stuff was. That last song was just bad pub rock.

Blocked for asking this. It’s unfortunate because I really do want to understand these refund rules.

What if I go to a concert expecting political firebranding and the artist chooses to do a set of heartfelt love songs. Do I get a refund then too?

Hugh Macabre @hughmacabre.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
She thinks you should be able to get a refund if a concert gets “political”? How bizarre. Is this in the T&Cs of the ticket purchase?

Looks good and I hope I can find time to watch. Worth noting that the researcher works for METR which engages in consultancy with OpenAI to evaluate threats. Not entirely an unbiased position and obviously such orgs can play a role in pushing a particular narrative under the guise of independence.
