Also, engineering balances have changed with time. CPU power has not advanced at the same rate as memory size, for physical reasons. So, algorithms that were obsessed with fitting data in memory, or optimising disk traffic, can be worse now than simpler ones, for practical problem sizes.

Almost 50 years ago now (really!), I remember being taught sorting & searching algorithms. I quickly realised that while interesting, they were only of theoretical value. The chances of me needing to write a sorting function of my own were already vanishingly small.

I never could understand how you managed it:- I suspect your replacement plus their deputies will exhaust their allocation. You may have taken it over from me (via Andy?), when the student numbers were a fraction of their present level; and I only managed by being so jaded I didn't do it properly.

Is it possible that the students currently living in the area might then stay in the new accommodation, relieving pressure on the existing housing? Just wondering.

The modern Turing Test: I have to convince Cloudflare I am human. How did we get to a state where the human spends their time waiting for the computer to deign to interact with them, and in a world with "AI"?

This afternoon, my MP (Liz Jarvis) was in Asda talking with whoever wanted to. When I got to the car, I pondered for a while what I might say to her. After a while I went back in, and just said "More tax for better services" to her assistant, and asked him to pass on the message.

...pay the £27.50 to POPLA to adjudicate. Oh, and #EuroCarParks have not written to me to say anything at all - they have simply marked the ticket on their site as paid or withdrawn. Bloody cowboys indeed.

Hugh Glaser @hugh.glasers.org · 29/08/2025
I did. And then the next thing is that POPLA tell me that #EuroCarParks have "withdrawn the appeal" (which doesn't quite make sense, since I thought it was my appeal!). Anyway, it means that EuroCarParks put all the pressure on me to pay, but then in the end they didn't have to...

Smart move by #EuroCarParks. They send me a ticket (after ANPR), which I appealed against (I didn't see the sign at the entrance because of foliage). They simply rejected my appeal without really addressing it. So I had to decide whether to risk the extra £40 (£100 from £60) by appealing to POPLA...

Compared with Eastleigh BC's 2.5%, 6.1%, 1.8%, -1.1%, -6.6%. And also the PCC tax is pretty much twice the size of the BC. So if your worry is about your "Local taxes" (although mine isn't particularly), the PCC has been far more significant than the BC. Am I misunderstanding my bills?

I've looked it up now :-) My specific question was about what the PCC tax changes have been since she started in what I now see is 2021. They have been (going backwards) 5.4%, 6.3%, 7.0%, 7.0%, 5.0%

Hey @richardgomer.bsky.social , is this the person who has been in charge of the Hampshire Police and Fire budget that seems to have rocketed over the last few years, from the breakdowns I get sent? Or am I getting it all wrong? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Ah Glad I mentioned them. I’m on an LTE in Kruger at the moment, so can’t easily engage. It was Zuse that reminded me; I think he was one. You could try interviewing Brian Randell about Zuse, he is very illuminating (and has several of his illuminations/paintings iirc always with a story)

Hi As I suspect you know, a few decades ago, the Science Museum did a series of interviews with old CSish people, basically to catch them before they died. On cassettes. But by the time I found out about it, they had to admit they hadn’t got the copyright properly, they weren’t selling them.

"I'm so smart I can tell you ChatGPT doesn't get things right", for example. "I'm so smart I can tell you when and how it is useful to use ChatGPT" is far too hard, and doesn't have the kudos.

Do yours have a space for asking what was good about the course (useful and important information if you actually want the course to be as good as possible)? I had to argue very hard with my university to get such a field added to ours. That really showed what the mindset was, as you suggest.

And the biggest increases are always the Police:- over 5% of a bigger proportion (about 12%) every year I remember. But over 70% this year is the County Council; so the local council could add 10% and it would be a 0.6% increase in the overall bill. It would be good if they could, perhaps.

The media always moan about "Council Tax", as if the money was going to your local council, who do the bins, which are always the pictures. My two *local* councils each take less than *6%* of my council tax. So there is very little they can do to reduce my bill.
The Annual Council Tax for your Property is: % change Amount
Hampshire County Council* 5.0% Inc £2325.31
Hampshire Police & Crime Commissioner 5.4% Inc £397.89
Hants & IOW Fire & Rescue 6.0% Inc £126.88
Eastleigh Borough Council 2.5% Inc £200.00
West End Parish Council 5.0% Inc £192.24
TOTAL £3242.32
