How do plant-soil feedbacks & defense pathways differ if they are induced by exogenous #phytohormones or #herbivory? These are some of the questions posed by PCP budding Editor, Merissa Huei-Hsuan Tsai @hueihsuantsai.bsky.social 🆓 doi.org/10.1093/pcp/... #PlantScience #PlantImmunity
Schematic overview showing defense-induced rhizosphere shifts and density-gated plant-soil feedback systems in B. oleracea. The diagram is split into the initial 'Conditioning phase' (left) where both the JA and SA pathways are induced by either phytohormone application (MeJA, SA) or herbivory (M. brassicae caterpillars; M. persicae aphids). The JA-pathway induction depleted Proteobacteria, mainly the genus Massilia, in the rhizosphere, while both pathways enriched a shared set of general stress-responsive microbes, including Planctomycetota (bacteria) and Mortierellomycota (fungi). The 'Feedback phase' is shown in the right panel: second-generation plants grown in conditioned soils were challenged with caterpillars or aphids; for clarity, only the SA-conditioned soil under aphid challenge is illustrated, as this was the only combination for which a soil-legacy effect on herbivore performance was detected. The soil legacy effect was not detectable under high aphid density, but became apparent under low aphid density. The diagram concludes that SA-conditioned soil from the conditioning phase is passed into the feedback phase. I was in a meeting where we talked about summer projects for undergraduates interested in plant science, & someone shared this link 💚 @apaterlini.bsky.social Some deadlines are as early as January, so pass this on to those who might be interested! www.plantsciencefutures.org.uk/work-experie...

Localized glutamine leakage shapes root microbiome
Root exudates are vital for guiding microbial dynamics in the rhizosphere. Nevertheless, the key component in root exudates responsible for defining the root microbiome has remained obscure. Tsai et a...

Our article "Guns in Rosettes: The Arabidopsis chemical weapons arsenal" is finally published @plantphys.bsky.social! You can download the #OpenAccess PDF here: doi.org/10.1093/plph... But real connoisseurs of #AntimicrobialCompounds will want to get the vinyl boxset: #PlantScience #PlantImmunity
A vinyl box with six colored vinyl LPs sticking out of its right side. The Title "Guns in Rosettes" is on top, with the subtitle "The Arabidopsis chemical weapons arsenal" just below. Then there is an Arabidopsis plant with machine guns sticking out. Below is the statement "6-LP LIMITED EDITION COLORED VINYL BOX SET"The back cover of the vinyl box set showing the tracklist:
1. Methionine-derived compounds
    Aliphatic GSLs
2. Tryptophan-derived compounds (trptonites)
    Indolic GSLs
    Camalexin
    Hycanite (4-OH-ICN)
3. Phenylalanine-derived compounds (phenylpropanoids)
    Benzenic GSLs
    Coumarins
    Hydroxycinnamates
    Flavonoids
4. Terpenoids
    (E)-β-caryophyllene
    α- and β-pinene
    Thalianin, arabidin, and DMNT

And the statement "Recorded live in front of an audience in 2025"

Localized glutamine leakage drives the spatial structure of root microbial colonization
Plant roots release exudates to encourage microbiome assembly, which influences the function and stress resilience of plants. How specific exudates drive spatial colonization patterns remains largely ...

Very excited to see our @nikogeldner.bsky.social lab x Feng Zhou lab work featured on the cover of Science! (1/5) We reveal how root architecture and nutrient leakage shape spatial patterns of microbial colonization, moving beyond traditional models of uniform exudation.
