I downloaded Grindr for the first time at 52. My friend JD gave me a week. But somewhere between the dick pics, disappearing men, and casual cruelty, I started wondering what exactly we’ve given ourselves permission to do to each other. New essay: It’s Grindr. Not That Deep.

When leaving stops being freedom: a conversation with essayist Huck Smith - CreARTivity Magazine
In his second essay collection, New Jersey-born essayist Huck Smith asks whether thirty years of walking away was ever freedom, or just the thing he learned to do best. A conversation about The Leavin...

“Leaving was safe. Staying was not.” I had a great conversation with #ILoveGay about The Leaving Gene, queer adulthood, chosen family, and the life that starts after coming out. They turned it into a terrific feature. Read it here: ilovegay.net/leaving-was-...

“Leaving Was Safe. Staying Was Not.” — Huck Smith on Queer Adulthood & Why Your Life Doesn’t Need a Script
Most queer storytelling stops at the coming-out moment. Dallas essayist Huck Smith is far more interested in everything that happens after — the decades of relationships, chosen family, grief, aging a...

A lovely thing to wake up to. The Leaving Gene is included in the Bay Area Reporter’s Fall 2026 nonfiction roundup, and Jim Piechota called me a “clever, seductive storyteller.” I’m going to be living off that one for a while. www.ebar.com/story/170245

I’m no longer certain the thing I’ve spent years looking for would improve the life I’ve finally learned how to live. This is an inconvenient realization. A new essay about love, solitude, control, and getting maybe a little too good at being single. huckysmith.substack.com/p/i-forgot-t...

I Forgot to Put In a Door
Notes on being single at fifty-two, and being very good at it. Maybe too good.

Just back from the gym, so I’m documenting the pump before it packs its bags and leaves. In two hours I’ll be softer through the middle and wondering where all that definition went. Donuts in the background? Bought them yesterday. Almost gone. Never stood a chance. The shoulders are coming along.

I’m learning there’s a strange difference between having people follow you and having people read you.

I really should stop tempting the universe. Yesterday I wrote about anticipation. Possibility. The lovely little window before reality gets its vote. Reality voted. Now I Know Better — the follow-up I absolutely did not expect to be writing quite this soon. Read it now on Substack. Link in bio.

I hate how much I think this one is going to resonate. Because if it does, it means you’ve probably had to ask yourself questions no one should have to ask about the people who raised them. I wrote it for the people doing that math quietly. huckysmith.substack.com/p/you-are-no...

And honestly, I appreciate the messages from people who tell me they hate my writing style too. Still had an impact. ;)

One of the most rewarding parts of putting your writing into the world is when someone takes the time to message you and say, “Thank you. I didn’t have the words for that.” That moves me more than I know how to explain. Which is ironic, because now I’m the one sitting here without the words.
