October games I’d like to play. I’ll hopefully get around to all of them eventually, but it’s going to be hard to decide which ones to buy right away and which ones to put off indefinitely.

One of the main reasons I got the Switch 2 has finally arrived :) I’m pretty curious, especially about switching between the different storylines.

My impressions after around 7 hours with the Final Fantasy Resonance demo: - excellent combat that borrows heavily from Octopath Traveler II (classic turn-based combat with a visible timeline and a strong focus on breaking enemies) - gorgeous visuals — the prettiest HD-2D I’ve ever seen.

Orbitals mainly caught my attention with its gorgeous audiovisual presentation, which pays homage to Japanese anime from the ’80s and ’90s. The visuals almost perfectly simulate an analog TV, accompanied by ’80s synth-pop, while even the voice acting and sound design feel like they came ➡️

Way of the Sword was my first Onimusha, and probably not my last. What I loved was Kyoto, the real-life locations and historical figures. The combat was great too, as were the visuals (games running on the RE Engine look amazing imo), the bosses, and the protagonist.➡️

Star Wars: Zero Company has been my biggest surprise of the year so far. It doesn’t have quite the same strategic depth as XCOM when it comes to tech progression and base building, but it makes up for it with interesting synergies and a lot of flexibility in combat. ➡️

After the last patch, which made it possible to respec shells, it was fairly easy to take a look at all the shell backstories. I found Tiel’s the best in particular – a pretty grim story about addiction, losing one’s humanity, and a little bit about love.

My Hawks (Star Wars Zero Company) — I spent about half an hour in the character creator, only to end up more or less with the default in the end.

Mortal Shell 2 has made an almost absurd leap over its predecessor in pretty much every aspect. The open world doesn’t reach Elden Ring’s megalomaniacal scale or level of detail, but it does bear some resemblance to it. The world and the overall art design are gorgeous. Removing stamina was perhaps➡️

If Nightreign was hectic and chaotic, Duskbloods takes it to another level. Even higher mobility, a million different mechanics, the time pressure, and on top of that, PvP. I’m not sure it’s really a game for me, but I do really like the setting, and the characters ➡️

I finally got around to reading Journey to the West before playing Black Myth: Wukong, and knowing the source material definitely paid off. It’s a loose continuation that works well on its own, but references the book often, and it was lovely seeing familiar characters brought to life.➡️

Pakistan – a country with the world's largest concentration of glaciers outside the polar regions and one of the world's biggest mango producers (and their mangoes taste completely different from anything we get in the Czech Republic). What a trip!

I never even owned a controller for my Switch—I played in handheld mode about 95% of the time. The Duskbloods finally gave me a reason to change that. I'm a bit disappointed it won't be a traditional Souls game, but I'm still hoping it'll be worth it.

I read Jason Schreier's Play Nice while I was on vacation. I used to think Bobby Kotick was mainly responsible for Blizzard's downfall, but paradoxically, the first nail in the coffin was World of Warcraft. It was a really interesting, but also pretty sad read (for many reasons).

The Odyssey is probably Nolan’s most intimate film. It’s brilliantly cast, but surprisingly restrained for a mythological epic (which isn’t a bad thing at all). Some of the episodes from Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca were excellent (Circe), while others felt weaker or rushed (the Laestrygonians)➡️

During my vacation, I played the first Final Fantasy (Pixel Remaster). I played the Android version, which ran great and had excellent touch controls. The story is very simple, but it has a nice twist at the end.➡️

My original plan was to finish Spec Ops: The Line in one sitting, but halfway through I couldn’t handle it anymore and had to take a break. It’s an incredibly powerful experience that I’d recommend even to people who don’t usually play shooters. Much like Coppola’s Apocalypse ➡️

Gaming collaborations often feel to me like a marketing move of little actual value, meant mainly to increase the visibility of one brand or another. That’s why the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners story quest in Wuthering Waves was such a big surprise for me. ➡️

Before Your Eyes is the most mechanically original game I've ever played. You don't have to click a single time—it's played entirely by blinking. It does an incredible job exploring the passage of time, mortality, and what it really means to live a fulfilling life.

Tomorrow, one of the best and most emotional indie games from last year drops on Switch 2 and mobile. If you don't know anything about it, keep it that way and just play it blind. It's only a bit over an hour long and totally worth it.

I thought FF Resonance would be a port/remaster of Brave Exvius, but it looks like it's going to be more of an equivalent to Octopath Traveler 0 vs Champions of the Continent. Now I'm starting to get interested. sea.ign.com/final-fantas...

It's so refreshing to see a AAA game built on an engine other than Unreal. The dark fantasy version of Kyoto in the new Onimusha looks absolutely amazing.

Today in my hometown, Brno (Czech Republic), Yuka Kitamura, lead composer at FromSoftware, gave a talk at the Game Access conference. She explained her different approach to games with a named protagonist (Sekiro) versus a “nameless” hero like the Tarnished or the Ashen One. She also talked about ➡️

Finished Uncharted 2 and I loved it. It’s not a deep, twist-heavy story, but the pacing is great and the writing is excellent. Naughty Dog dialogue feels so natural, especially with how the characters talk over each other. The setting is perfect. The gameplay is much more fun than in the first game.

An excellent game for a few hours — an incredible level of polish and fun combat. I really love how charming the art style is, and the little bug facts were a really nice touch. If you missed it, I’d recommend at least trying it on Game Pass.

Red and Antea from Banishers: Ghosts of New Eden are one of the best-written gaming couples I’ve seen. I loved Red’s humor and Scottish accent. I used to be pretty skeptical about gacha games, despite never having tried one. That changed about a year ago with P5X, but it still isn’t a genre I actively look for. The even bigger surprise for me has been Arknights: Endfield — a narrative-driven sci-fi gacha mixing RPG combat with ➡️

Mixtape is a playlist of short memories and feel-good moments where, as a group of three friends, you experience their last day together. There’s no dramatic central conflict or mystery, but instead a lot of nostalgia, light melancholy, and euphoric moments that made me unable to stop smiling.➡️

With Replaced, I had to seriously stop myself from screenshotting every other scene. The pixel art is unreal, the camera work is slick, and both the story and music are great. It could’ve been tighter—maybe a third shorter, with fewer fights—but still totally worth the wait.

Nine Sols is one of the best games I’ve ever played. It also features some of the hardest (yet very fair) boss fights I’ve experienced. I spent about five hours on the final boss. The lore and story are excellent. I’ll probably feel a strong urge to go for the Platinum trophy on PlayStation.

The Lord of Hatred campaign nicely wraps up the story of Lilith and Mephisto. It has a solid pace (I played through it in one go) and offers quite a bit of fan service. I wouldn’t say it’s full of unexpected plot twists, but it holds together really well and definitely surpasses Vessel of Hatred.➡️

My friend and I recently finished Satisfactory (mostly thanks to him). It’s an incredibly addictive game, and I was surprised that, besides building factories, it also offers exploration of an absurdly huge and beautiful world. Plus, the writing is really cool—it strongly reminded me of Portal.

References in Saros to The King in Yellow led me to watch S1 of True Detective. Maybe it’s recency bias, but I probably haven’t seen anything better since Chernobyl. I haven’t felt this sick in a long while — from murderous psychopaths to infidelity in relationships.

Returnal still hasn’t been topped for me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if #Saros ends up being my GOTY. Where it really shines is the presentation. The layered story is great too. At the same time, it feels like a shift away from roguelite toward a more classic story-driven action game.

Returnal holds a special place in my heart, and even after more than a hundred hours it hasn’t lost any of its magic. Getting the chance to review #Saros is something I see as a great honor, but also a huge responsibility. You can read my review on April 24 on @hrejcz.bsky.social (in Czech only).

Act 2 finished. But that’s just the beginning :) After 100 hours on PC, I started playing Returnal on PS5 as well. There are so few games where both the gameplay and the story captivate me this much. And the story is so complex and ambiguous that I enjoy it even more on repeated playthroughs.

Slay the Spire 2 is a smart evolution of the first game—it doesn’t change anything that already worked great, it just improves and expands on it. I like the new visuals and the new characters. Enemies feel much more varied thanks to the new mechanics. ➡️

Some of the final bosses gave me a hard time, but I finished FF X. I loved the story, the world, and the themes – the cyclical nature, tradition, religion as a tool of power but also as a possible comfort, parental relationships, love, and self-sacrifice. The combat system was probably ➡️

Stray was good, but given its GOTY nomination at TGA, I expected a bit more. The visuals are great, as well as the level design (no “yellow paint,” yet it’s always clear where to go) and how well it captures the feeling of playing as a small, agile creature. The gameplay and story are solid.

My first game review ever—probably way too long and a bit too descriptive, and yeah, it’s in Czech.😅 It was a fun and interesting experience. Kinda wish Icarus had been in a better state when I played the review copy, but there are still a few days left until release. hrej.cz/article/rece...

Great video on how not to die in Slay the Spire 2. After watching it, I finally managed to complete the game even with the Regent, with whom I had no success before. I found the section about planning your route on the map especially helpful. www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCh7...

Project Hail Mary is more of a humorous buddy movie and less hard sci‑fi than the book. The runtime felt a bit stretched, but thanks to the charismatic Ryan Gosling, I had a good time most of the time. Among Andy Weir adaptations, Scott’s The Martian still comes out on top.

Not a fan of the temple puzzles in Final Fantasy X, but the Bevelle is especially frustrating. Not only is it confusing, but the movement through the temple is handled terribly as well. I’ve been stuck here for over an hour. The game would be so much better without these annoying parts.😓

I played Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PS+. Even though it came out in 2021, it’s one of the most beautiful games of this generation. It has great pacing, varied environments, and likeable characters. The only thing that slightly disrupted the flow for me were the puzzle sections with Clank.

After watching the series The Eternaut, I was impressed by how different Argentinian productions can be. I see similar potential in The Path Into The Abyss – a survival shooter set in the ruins of Buenos Aires. I only played the demo briefly, but the atmosphere drew me in from the very first minute.
