More fun facts from the Lord of the Rings audio books! Frodo was still in Hobbiton when the Ringwraiths first showed up there looking for him. He heard one talking to The Gaffer - it was REALLY close! #lotr #fotr #book #books #audiobook #audiobooks #ringwraith #booksvsmovies

More fun facts from the Lord of the Rings audio books! It wasn't just Bilbo's birthday at the start of The Fellowship of the Ring - it was Frodo's too! His coming of age (33) no less! #lotr #books #booksvsmovies

For sure, it's been a blast! Audiobooks are crazy expensive to buy, but most libraries participate in digital library services (one called Hoopla and one called Libby) & you can get audiobooks for free! We recently joined our local library when we heard about it & have really enjoyed audiobooks!

Nice! What have you been playing?

010

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 31/05/2025

Haha I totally get it! I tried to do the books again a few years back and fell off as well. I'm doing the audiobook (yay library!) narrated by Andy Serkis (Gollum's actor) and that's been a blast so far!

Justice for Farmer Maggot! (Fellowship of the Ring movie did him dirty). I'm re-reading Lord of the Rings for the first time in a LONG time and it's been *REALLY* interesting to note the differences between the films and the books since I've seen the films dozens of times. #lotr #movies #books

Love this, well done! I don't know a ton about art on the back-end, but I think I have heard people say that grayscale is great practice because it makes you really work to get depth/contrast. I think you're crushing it!

Woohoo! I've collected 7 of the 9 art styles for the Nazgul cards in the Magic: The Gathering, Lord of the Rings set💪(plus the Witch-King and a generic Ringwraith). I'm excited to make a deck with these once I complete the collection! #lotr #mtg #magic #cards

Our first Sanderson book! The Frugal Wizard's Handbook for Surviving Medieval England was a blast! The story pulls you in quickly & the premise is a neat twist on popular tropes. Pacing was a bit end-heavy, but Pixy and I didn't mind because it was so fun. 4.5 ⭐ (if you know, you know 😉) #Cosmere

Loki, Master of Litterbending, must restore balance to the world through play time, napping, eating, and being bad at grooming. Currently there is a great imbalance, and napping rules all. #Caturday #CatsOfBlueSky #HereThereBeMonsters #Loki

REALLY enjoyed adding "skill challenges" to overland travel during D&D yesterday! They add variety beyond social & combat encounters + PCs used untouched spells/skills Difficult terrain, inclimate weather, equipment failure, hunting/gathering, & navigation Can you think of any others? #dnd #ttrpg

We used to joke about this exact same setup at our table. Never actually got around to trying it though.

What have you thought of it so far? We were curious about this game when it was announced, but completely forgot about it.

110

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 30/04/2025

The trick is to plan broadly. Often, "what will this NPC say to the PCs after the party does this one specific thing" will be unusable. Things like, "how do people of this culture generally respond to disrespect?" have much more likelihood of being useful in a pinch.

010

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 30/04/2025

I'm quite certain that you don't have to worry about that happening. 🥸

110

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 30/04/2025

Indeed! I was really impressed. None of my games were even particularly close. The recursion is super strong in limited against this set's removal.

FINALLY got a 7-win draft in Tarkir: Dragonstorm! Failed to make Mardu work like 4 times now, but Abzan crushed on the first try! Yathan Roadwatcher rezzing Reputable Merchant or Skirmish Rhino bought time to draw my bombs. (Honorable mention: Abzan Monument.) #MTG #Arena #MagicTheGathering

Day 3/3 of our Dungeons and Dragons Fortune cards for 4th edition! Nasty combo in this pack: knock down with 2nd attack card, then use 3rd attack card to do it again when they stand up! This was supposed to be posted last weekend, but time got away from me! Sorry! #DND #4e #TTRPG #card #pack

Day 2/3 of our Dungeons and Dragons Fortune cards for 4th edition. Packs seem to have one card w/ full art; about half the pack are tactics cards & the other half is split b/w attack & defense cards. Anyone out there played 4e? How do these compare to normal abilities? #DND #TTRPG #4e #card #pack

110

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 19/04/2025

I totally get that! We have a hoard of all the first-party 3.5 books as well as a few random ones like the EverQuest TTRPG.

010

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 18/04/2025

Yeah, thanks! Those both sound super interesting. Are either of them actively being developed? Or are they "complete" systems now?

100

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 18/04/2025

I'm afraid not! Our in-person TTRPG group dissolved a while back and that's how we did most of our system experimentation. I've heard of MERP, but don't really know much about any of them. What do you like about them?

100

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 18/04/2025

Same, I started with 3.5. I actually still run it regularly because I enjoy the "more-grounded" feel and think it fits better with the type of low-mid fantasy campaigns that I enjoy. I like more of a Lord of the Rings-style overcoming odds sort of adventure over the popular superhero style.

000

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 18/04/2025

Freaking love this! We already have Duregar and Svirfneblin, so making some dark halflings rocks!

110

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 18/04/2025

Heck yeah! This is such an awesome book. Looks to be in great condition too.

010

HereThereBeMonsters @htbm.bsky.social · 18/04/2025

That sounds like an awesome gym! Great collection of 3.5 books too. Awesome to see the II versions of everything too. I loved the expansions to the core books and wish WorC hadn't abandoned that in later editions.
