Inbuilt problems or selected advantage? "All humans carry a baseline #glycosaminoglycan deficit that primes the joint for degeneration. Indeed, humans have a substantially higher prevalence of degenerative skeletal diseases than do non-human primates." www.nature.com/articles/s41...

The gene-regulatory evolution of the human skeleton - Nature
Massively parallel reporter assays and human–ape hybrid skeletal cells are used to study the evolution of human cis-regulatory elements (CREs), revealing how differences in CREs have sh...

We lost a giant of #glycotime, John Hanover @niddk 😢 . His pioneering work on O-GlcNAcylation as a modulator of glucose metabolism transformed our understanding of glycosylation as a signaling PTM. In this 2023 podcast he shares his passion for the field. irp.nih.gov/podcast/2023...

Research in Nature Astronomy identifies a type of sugar made of four carbon atoms, called erythrulose, near the centre of the Milky Way galaxy. The finding indicates that complex, biologically relevant molecules can form in space. go.nature.com/4vZvbOB 🔭🧪
This is figure 1, which shows the brightest and most unblended transitions of erythrulose observed towards the G+0.693 molecular cloud.

It's awesome to have a great conference so close to home! We had a fantastic time at this year's Greater Area of Los Angeles (GALA) Chem Bio Symposium, hosted at UC Irvine. Big thanks to Jenn Prescher and @mattegriffin.bsky.social for organizing!

One of our awesome postdocs, Ankita Paul, represented the lab at ACS Spring 2026! Ankita gave a talk as part of the Women in CARB Symposium. Well done, Ankita!

We're excited to learn that our NOTISE method of networking OGT interactors and substrates is the subject of a News & Views article, "Cracking the code to O-GlcNAcylation networks"! Thanks to the authors for the nice feature. Find the article here: doi.org/10.1038/s415... #NOTISEme #glycotime

Cracking the code to O-GlcNAcylation networks - Nature Chemical Biology
Understanding protein glycosylation is essential to decode complex cellular networks. A systems-level approach that networks substrate and interacting proteins of O-GlcNAc transferase, the sole enzyme...

It was #glycotime at last week's organic chemistry seminar! Prof. Charlie Fehl gave a great talk about his lab's work studying aberrant glycosylation in hyperglycemic disease. Very cool to see the tools they've developed.

We integrated experimental and computational approaches to generate a systems-level view of a key post-translational modification, O-GlcNAc. In vivo studies across tissues reveal shared and tissue-specific functions. Congrats to Matt, John, Yao, and the whole team! #NOTISEme bit.ly/3ZgCOBM

Functional analysis of O-GlcNAcylation by networking of OGT interactors and substrates - Nature Chemical Biology
Functional studies of O-GlcNAcylation have often focused on individual modifications. Now, a systems-level approach has identified simultaneous O-GlcNAcylation events that coordinate cellular activiti...
