My talk on "depicting determinstic variables within DAGs" is now online. The talk explains how DAGs can be used to help with understanding & estimating causal effects involving derived variables (e.g. BMI) & compositional data (e.g. nutrition data). #EpiSky #CausalSky youtu.be/upj20Pw8jTU?...

Dr. Heather Bradley Presenting the meta-analysis of overdose rates among people who inject drugs (PWID) at #SER2024. With the main goal of how to collect data for that question. @mattpfox.bsky.social @epiresearch.bsky.social #EpiCan

The goal is to describe the world as it is. Descriptive epidemiology is not causal. It can be about hypotheses generation. Beautiful visualization doesn’t mean they are trustworthy. But people are more likely to believe it. #SER2024 @mattpfox.bsky.social @epiresearch.bsky.social #EpiCan

The focus on causal method alone, is not sufficient especially for those in public health roles: #SER2024 “More than just an epi curve: Descriptive epidemiology as a crucial public health discipline” @mattpfox.bsky.social @epiresearch.bsky.social #EpiCan

Thank you Dr. Lauren McCullough for reminding us to remember the forest and beyond focusing on the trees.. To be rigorous but also allow ourselves and our work some tender care. As a field we have made great progress and continue to. #SER2024 @mattpfox.bsky.social @epiresearch.bsky.social #EpiCan

US customs agent asked what I study. I said Epidemiology. He handed back my passport and started talking about his eye problems. 🤔🫤 I let him finish b4 responding, "I'm just a researcher, not a doctor/optometrist." His face dropped ☹️. Guess I won’t be curing any eye issues today!😂 #SER2024 #EpiCan

The pandemic or addiction that is the single biggest existential threat to human civilization is not a disease or a drug. It's denial. Far too many are in denial of our polycrisis. And as a result, no action will be taken to solve our problems. Yes this thought was inspired by that SciAm article.
