I may be naive (and perhaps seeking an easy way out) in asking this but what does research mean (particularly in this new paradigm)?

The ACM Digital Library, where a LOT of computing-related research is published (I'd say at least 75% of my own publications), is now not only providing (without consent of the authors and without opt-in by readers) AI-generated summaries of papers, but they appear as the *default* over abstracts.

Fictional Failures and Real-World Lessons: Ethical Speculation Through Design Fiction on Emotional Support Conversational AI
Authors: Faye Kollig, Jessica Pater, Fayika Farhat Nova, Casey Fiesler
(There are tabs with "abstract" and "summary" and "summary" is selected.)

The second paper, "Regulating Social Media: Surveying the Impact of Nepali Government's TikTok Ban" (dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1...) examines the impact of an earlier TikTok ban in Nepal. Recent events show how critical collective governance is, and we offer insights to move towards community governance
Screenshot from the second paper that shows the title and abstract. In this work, we examine the impact of a TikTok ban in Nepal that was subsequently lifted.

The first paper, "Conflict in Community-Based Design: A Case Study of a Relationship Breakdown" (dl.acm.org/doi/pdf/10.1...), examines what designers and researchers can do when they encounter beliefs that differ from their own when engaging with community partners. Led by Alekhya Gandu.
Screenshot of the paper and its abstract, which asks the question "what should designers do when key community members’ practices seem to enact an oppressive and harmful structure?"

Feeling a bit of FOMO for not being in Bergen 🇳🇴 this week, but so proud that our work will be part of #CSCW2025. We have two papers this year. They engage with difficult questions about collaboration, care, and governance in socio-technical systems.

On my way back from #CSCW2024 in Costa Rica. Taking this moment to write my first post in this platform. During my time there, I got to think more about care and slowing down …
