a reminder to the "composer" of the Rohan Kishibe: At a Confessional special that Hirohiko Araki thinks people who make "AI art" are "con artists" and that IP theft (inherent to almost all generative AI) is a "villain" and Rohan, his mangaka stand-in, would mince words less than even that

Shin-on-Gak on Twitter, translated from Japanese:

"This is the first original soundtrack in the history of global entertainment films in which all tracks were composed by Al (not just partially used, but fully composed, excluding pre-existing songs). We at the SHIN-ON-GAK Production Studio have combined all our strength and worked at full throttle to dedicate terrifyingly solemn compositions to this work. To all members of the fandom, please look forward to it!! (Representative Kikuchi, Shaggs FC Member)"

below is a still from Thus Spoke Kishibe Rohan: At a Confessional, an upcoming live-action JoJo's Bizarre Adventure spinoff special

Hirohiko Araki, "Today's World of 'Con Artists'":

"Speaking about 'societal evils,' I think that as Al continues to spread throughout society, we're going to see an increasingly shady world filled with scammers exploiting it. Recently, I came across a drawing and thought, "This is something I drew, right?" I was shocked to find out it was actually created by Al. When I draw manga, I add subtle, personal elements that make the work uniquely mine. But this Al-generated piece even mimicked details like the way I draw eyelashes, so precisely that it was almost impossible to tell it apart from my work. If it were based on recent drawings, I'd know right away, "No, I didn't draw this." On the other hand, I honestly wouldn't be able to tell the difference if it were done with my art from about ten years ago, when my memory of it would be a little hazy. The more Al advances, the more this kind of thing will happen.

"Art reflects the times, and manga is one example of that. Seeing this world of con artists appear in manga could very well mean that we're headed for a future world dominated by fraudsters. This type of 'evil' in today's age will undoubtedly end up impacting manga down the line.

"Copyright infringement by Al is also a 'villain' that we manga artists must face. The extreme scenario is that Al-generated fakes might start being accepted as the "real thing," and even if we try to protect our work, these counterfeits are becoming so accurate and sophisticated that it's no longer a fight an individual can win. Having some kind of laws would probably be the only way to regulate this. However, because we're dealing with a world of con artists, there's also a very real possibility that laws favoring them will appear before we know it. Personally, I entrust my copyright management to Shueisha, but some manga artists are lax in managing their copyrights, leading to others using their artwork without permission or even leaking original drawings. When I see that," I worry…

F.F. from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Gender identity unclear, but goes by they/them pronouns.

Ranma and Akane from Ranma½. Both queer and trans coding throughout the show, as a result of Ranma's gender-swapping curse.

Gren from Cowboy Bebop. Uses he/him pronouns, implied to be gay, has breasts as a result of hormone imbalance.

Joseph Joestar from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Not textually gay, but dresses in drag and has a strong relationship with Caesar Zeppeli. Perhaps bisexual.

Josh said he'd be back in time to record our Samurai Champloo podcast. Fuu's optimistic, but me and Jin are not so sure. So just to be safe we're delaying it till next Monday the 19th. Don't worry though, Space Dandy will still be on time! ...right?

same scene: Fuu and Jin are kneeling, with two executioners behind them. Jin is sternly quiet as Fuu insists, "Come on, he might be right over the horizon as we speak!"

the second worst thing Germany has done in JoJo's lore, apart from... y'know...

a traffic sign in Germany, depicting two stick figures in angular poses walking towards each other across a road with a car heading towards them, and a red line diagonally crossing the entire graphic.

text below reads: "no jojo posing in the road"

the same traffic sign graphic from before, but with Dio Brando and Jotaro Kujo in iconic poses walking towards one another in place of the stick figures.

just thinking about how Rumiko Takahashi is in her late 60's, having made a half-dozen of the most iconic manga series of all time, and is still releasing new chapters every week. what a legend. 🫶
