The goal of the tariffs is the same as all of the Trump 2.0 program: consolidating power. DOGE, attacks on media, universities, lawyers, protesters, courts, and tariffs all make sense when viewed through this lens.
Now every country and every company will have to come hat in hand to trump, to plead their case to the King and get their little carveout or exemption and he can get whatever he wants from them. He can also threaten these carveouts to punish anyone who would dissent or support his political adversaries. That's the goal.
